She made a little noise of discontent. I crouched down to Liam’s height. “Be good while Logan’s gone, okay?”
“Okay!”
He seemed so unbothered, and that was likely because he was busy coloring.
I had done some work yesterday, but I wanted to go into the tattoo shop today. Working remotely was fine, but I liked going into the shop. Part of that was because it was easier than working from my bed. I’d work from home more if I had a dedicated space or even an office to do so. One day, just not today.
I drove home, and while I was getting out of my car, I noticed a man standing across the street. I’d never seen this man before, and I immediately had alarm bells going off as he walked over to me.
“Are you Lily Mathews?” he asked, giving me a friendly smile.
“Yes. Can I help you?”
That was when I realized he had an envelope in his hand, and he stretched it out toward me. I took it, and then he was off, walking back to his car. I stared down at the envelope in my hand, my brow furrowing as I noticed it was from the court system. Did I get a jury summons and never show?
I walked into my mom’s house, but before she could say anything to me, I was opening up the envelope.
“You have got to be fucking kidding me!” I exclaimed out loud when I realized what it was.
Tears pricked my eyes. Why was he doing this? First, he flaked out on Rosie every chance he got, and now he was filing for sole custody? None of this made any sense.
I wanted to call Seth and ream him out, but that was not the rational thing to do. He’d use that as an excuse for why he should have Rosie.
“Honey, what’s wrong?” Mom asked.
I thrust the papers at her, and immediately, her face fell. “Oh, we’re fighting this. Let’s call your lawyer.”
And all the happiness from spending the day with Logan went out the window because I had to focus on this. On doing what was right for my daughter. I never, ever kept her from Seth, and the only reason I thought he was doing this was to have power over me. Or because I told his girlfriend he was cheating on her. I wasn’t going down without a fight. There was no way he was taking my daughter from me.
Chapter Thirty-One
LOGAN
I rolled my eyes as TJ stood on top of the bar. He put his hands up and looked out at all of us. “Alright, boys, let’s get fucking LIIIIIT!”
I shook my head at him, but we were all used to his antics by now. I was curious if that was going to change when his twins were born. Blaise said it probably wouldn’t because TJ was our loudmouth goof.
We were finally at the end of our Western Canada road trip, and now that we had hit three wins in a row, Coach told us to blow off steam tonight before we headed home tomorrow. It had been a good trip, but I missed Lily and the kids. She hadn’t been that responsive to my texts lately. I tried not to think about it too much. She said she had a lot of work piling up before I left. I was being clingy.
Blaise nudged me. “What’s up with you?”
I stared down at my phone where she left me on read and frowned. “Nothing,” I muttered and took a sip of my beer.
“Something’s been up your ass since we left Philly.”
“I miss Lily.”
He raised an eyebrow. “Yeah? I miss V, too.”
I shoved my phone into my pocket. “And she’s been leaving me on read. I think I’m being clingy.”
Blaise frowned. “Is that usual for her?”
I shook my head.
No, it wasn’t. Since the Halloween party at Mac’s, we’d been texting non-stop. Even before that, we texted regularly. Her not responding to me while I was on this road trip was weird. Mari got dodgy when I asked last night when I video-chatted with Liam. She’d only say Lily was really busy. Which I totally understood, but I couldn’t help but feel like she wasn’t telling me something.
“Why’s it bother you so much? She’s not your girlfriend anyway,” Blaise reminded me and gave me a pointed look.
