“Oh, you’re not awake hoping to get a ride of this?” he teased and gestured to his body.

I laughed and shook my head.

“You sure?” he asked with a naughty grin.

I bit my lip and shook my head again. I was lying. I was so horny for my baby daddy, but I was also exhausted and needed to get to bed. “I gotta finish this.”

He took the pen and papers out of my hand and put them on the bedside table next to me. “Avs, you gotta get your rest.”

“I know, but I have a lot to do.”

He placed a hand on my growing stomach. “I know, but the stress isn’t good for the baby. Let’s go to sleep.”

I yawned and nodded. “Okay. Did you eat? I left you a plate in the fridge.”

He nodded as he laid on his back and rested his head against his pillow. “Yeah. Thanks, baby. That was really nice.”

Warmth filled my body when he called me ‘baby.’ Some women didn’t like that, but I loved it. It made me feel like I was really his, and forget my fears that our upcoming marriage was only a convenience because of the baby.

I waved him off and went into the bathroom to brush my teeth. It was nothing to make him dinner. I didn’t mind doing it since I had to make dinner for myself, anyway. I was a caregiver, and I liked taking care of Nolan. Making him dinner was the least I could do for him when he did so much more for me.

I slid back into bed and melted into him when he wrapped his arms around me.

“Avs?” he asked.

“Yeah?”

“Why didn’t you tell your dad about the baby?”

I sighed. I didn’t want to get into this with him. I didn’t want to explain that I was scared of miscarrying like my mother did. Or that I was thirty-five and scared to tell my dad I got ‘oops pregnant.’

“Do you know why my sister and I are so far apart in age?” I asked.

“No.”

“My mom miscarried in between us. I wanted to make sure this was real. That we wouldn’t lose Peanut.”

He reached a hand up and lightly caressed my face. “Oh, baby, why didn’t you tell me?”

I shook my head. “I’m sorry.”

His thumb stroked against my cheek, and his calloused manly hands comforted me as the tears fell. This pregnancy was turning me into a weepy mess.

He wiped the tears away. “I promise you, nothing’s gonna happen to Peanut.”

“What if it does?” I cried.

He pressed a kiss to my lips to silence me, and it worked. Feeling his lips on mine, the way he fit against me, comforted me better than he would ever know.

He pulled away and stroked my face again. “Hey, it’s gonna be okay. I promise you. Now get some sleep.”

I nodded. “Okay. Nolan?”

“Yeah, baby?”

I couldn’t help the smile spreading across my face at him calling me that again. “We should have my dad over for dinner.”

“Okay. Tell me when and I’ll make sure I’m home.”
