Dad looked up in alarm, and his face fell when he looked at me. “Oh, sweetheart.”

“I don’t want to lose either of them. I can’t lose Nolan. He’s my everything,” I sobbed out and let the tears flow.

Dad handed me a box of tissues, and I blotted my eyes with a tissue.

I didn’t want to admit it, but my dad was right. I literally ran to my daddy when things got too hard with my husband. I didn’t want to face the hard stuff, so I had been giving my husband the cold shoulder instead. How could Nolan ever love me with the way I treated him?

I wiped my tears away, and my dad looked like he was going to say something else, but my phone beeped in my purse and distracted me. I took it out and saw a text from Nolan.

NOLAN: Are you going to be home for dinner?

ME: No, I’m at my dad’s watching the game. Do you want me to come home?

NOLAN: No.

I cringed at his one-word answer. That was not good. I needed to fix this. I couldn’t let Nolan go back inside himself and keep his feelings from me. I couldn’t push him away because the idea of losing Norah scared me to death to the point I accused him of being in love with his ex-wife.

I put my phone back into my purse and stared blankly at the TV screen as I thought about how to fix my marriage. I wasn’t sure I knew where to start.

“I think I need to go home soon,” I said.

“Okay, sweetheart. Hey! Did you find out what you’re having?”

I nodded and put a hand on my stomach. “A girl.”

“You got a name?”

“We’re gonna name her Norah Mary MacGregor.”

Dad pinned me with a curious look. “Norah Mary…”

“To honor both of our moms.”

The corners of Dad’s eyes crinkled, and he looked like he was about to get choked up. “Your mother would have loved that.”

“I wish she were here.”

“Me too. She would have been so proud of you. Of both you and your sister.”

The front door banged open, and Gemma barged into the house like she knew we were talking about her. She stomped the snow off her boots and took them off at the door.

“Speak of the devil!” Dad joked.

Gemma rolled her eyes as she brushed snow out of her hair and took off her jacket. She slumped on the couch next to me and looked at the TV screen.

“What’s up with Metzy tonight?” she asked. “He can’t cover a goal to save his life.”

“What are you doing here?” I asked.

She and Dad shared a look.

“Well, I went to your house, but Nolan said you were here. He was grouchier than normal. Are you guys okay?”

I shook my head and willed the tears not to fall again.

“Come on, let’s go upstairs. You know Dad can’t stand girl-talk.”

I growled at her, but she helped me off the couch and up the steps to her childhood bedroom.
