“This morning,” I grumbled.
The doctor tried to hide his smile, but from Avery’s scowl, she saw it. “Could have been from that.”
When he left, we were plunged into silence again.
“I’m sorry,” she whispered.
“It’s okay,” I said and squeezed her hand.
“I’m taking my anger out on you. I’m mad at myself.”
“Why?”
She wiped away a stray tear. “It’s my fault.”
“Hey, the doctor thinks it might be nothing. It was just a little spotting, right?”
She nodded.
“Just a little bit?”
She nodded again. “Did I freak out over nothing?”
I shrugged. “I’d rather it be nothing and know my girls are okay. No matter what, it will never be your fault.”
Her eyes welled up with tears again. “I want my sister.”
“I know, baby.”
“Why am I always expected to run to her for every problem she has, but the one time I needed her, she couldn’t be bothered?”
“I’m here, okay? Lean on me.”
She stared up at me, her eyes brimming with tears again. My heart wrenched at how much pain she was in, especially since I didn’t know how to take that all away. “Nolan… I’m scared.”
I kissed her forehead. “I know.”
“I don’t want to lose you.”
I furrowed my brow at that. Before I could ask her what she meant, the doctor returned, and they started doing more tests.
It was a long night, and eventually, they let us go home. They didn’t think anything was wrong with the baby. They even did another ultrasound, and she looked fine. The doctor thought it was a fluke. It could happen sometimes, but they told us to monitor it.
It was the scariest night of my life. I didn’t want to think about the possibility that we could have lost the baby. Avery was afraid of a miscarriage because of her mom’s history. I got that. It was why we waited to tell her dad for a while.
Gemma never got back to me, which seriously pissed me off. I could tell it defeated Avery; she really wanted her sister to comfort her.
When we got home, I hopped into bed with her and stroked her hair while she cried into my chest.
“It’s okay. We didn’t lose her. It’s going to be okay,” I reassured her.
She sniffled into my t-shirt. “I can’t lose her.”
I sighed.
She looked up at me. “I can’t.”
“Avery, you know I love you, right? It would crush me if we lost Peanut. But if something happened, we would get through it together, okay?”
