Avery was too quiet, but I focused on the road while she tried to call someone.
“Gemma, I need you! Answer your fucking phone!” she swore into the phone and then punched the end button.
I put a hand on her thigh. “It’s gonna be okay.”
“No, it’s not!” she cried.
“Avs, you gotta calm down. It could be nothing.”
“How the fuck would you know?” she snapped. “It’s not happening to you.”
I clenched my jaw and bit my tongue so I didn’t say anything I would regret later. She wasn’t mad at me; she was just taking her frustration out on me. I had to let it roll off my back. I was more concerned with getting her to the hospital and making sure she was okay. The hospital was a ten-minute drive, so we got there quickly. She was still freaking out when we got to the ER.
“Avs, it’s gonna be okay. Let me help get you signed in, okay?”
She nodded and wiped her eyes with the back of her hand. “What if we lose her?”
“Let’s not think about that yet, okay?”
I walked up to the front desk and smiled at the older woman behind it. “Hi.”
“How can I help you?” the nurse asked.
I thumbed over my shoulder at Avery. “My wife’s pregnant, and she had some bleeding.”
She thrust a clipboard at me, and I took it back to Avery. She tore it from my hands and furiously started filling it out.
“Avs.”
“It’s fine,” she snapped.
“Baby…”
“Nolan, fuck off.”
I held up my hands in frustration and let her do what she needed to do. I didn’t want to lose our baby. We were just at the doctor’s today, and they said everything was fine. We listened to her heartbeat again and everything. Why was this happening now?
Avery handed in the clipboard, and we sat, waiting for somebody to come talk to us. She was texting angrily, and I had a feeling who it was aimed at. I was walking on eggshells over here.
“Nol?” I heard a familiar voice ask.
I looked up and saw Kath standing in front of us wearing her hospital scrubs and giving us a concerned look.
I knew my ex-wife worked at the hospital, but I didn’t think about running into her tonight. I cared more about making sure my wife and unborn child were okay.
“Hey, Kath,” I sighed.
Kath’s eyes slid over to Avery, whose face was set in a hard line. “What’s going on?”
“Kath, you’ve met my wife Avery before, right?”
Kath nodded. “Nice to see you again. What’s going on?”
Avery put a protective hand on her belly.
Kath’s eyes widened in recognition, and I nodded. She looked back at the nurse’s station. “Let me see who’s on call tonight. I’m just coming in for my shift. Hang tight.”
She left as soon as she had appeared.
