You’re welcome.
Maevey
Are you weirded out yet?
Yup.
Me
Nah. They’re pretty into the whole Were thing, but I can dig it.
Maevey
No one says “dig it” anymore, Sybbie.
Me
Maybe I can try bring it back? ‘Cause we’re Weres? And dogs dig holes? So we “dig it”?
Maevey
Cringe.
Me
Fine.
Maevey
I’m gonna hit the hay. I love you.
Me
I love you, too.
Maevey
Goodnight x
I sigh, putting my phone down. I wish I could tell my sister everything, but I don’t want to make her feel even worse than she already does. I know how much it hurt her to watch me go. And I know I’ve been protecting her my entire life and putting my own needs aside, but I can’t break the habit.
I’m not necessarily sure I want to.
An annoying tapping sound interrupts my thoughts.
I lift my head from the pillows, looking over my shoulder at where I closed the blinds over the glass door to the patio. I hold my breath, listening, but all I can hear is the rain outside.
Sighing, I lie back down.
Tap. Tap. Tap.
I sit up again, my heart lurching.
‘What…?’
I get to my feet and creep across the floorboards. The rain outside is thundering down, loud on the tin roof. I make it to the blinds, gripping my phone in my hand, ready to either use it as a weapon or a way to call the police.
A phone to the face would hurt, right? Better than a fist? Can I use my phone as my fist?
