“Thanks.” Lucas shook the man’s hand.

A few minutes before Avery arrived with two bags of her things, George Stevens, his cousin Robin’s husband, knocked on the glass doors.

“Avery called me. I heard you might need me to look over some papers?” George said with a smile.

George’s law offices were just down the street. He could see them if he leaned out the front door. He hadn’t even thought to give the man a call.

As the man sat in one of his new booths, looking over the paperwork, Avery made them all some iced coffee.

“Well?” he asked when George was done reading.

He laughed. “The man’s lawyer is an idiot. There is no way this is going to stand up. First, I did some checking on your father before I headed over here. He’s out on a temporary bond with a restraining order and a no-contact order.”

“So he’s broken that already by coming here?” Lucas asked.

George shook his head. “You were not listed on the restraining order. Just your mother and sister.”

“He also has regular check-ins, which I can check to see if he’s good on first thing in the morning.” George wrote something down. “I’ll take these with me.” He stopped. “That is assuming you want to hire me?”

“Yes, please. I have no idea where to start.”

George smiled. “This is a good start, hiring me. Don’t worry, I’ll give you the family rate.” He winked. “Or I could trade for free tacos for life.”

Lucas chuckled then added. “Could you help file a restraining order for me? I don’t ever want that man on my property again.”

“Sure thing. I’ll post it in the morning.” George stood up. “We all can’t wait for this place to open. Don’t worry,” he said as he shook his hand. “He’s punching out to draw blood when he couldn’t get it from your mom and sister. Trust me, we’ll put this man where he belongs.” He shook his hand and then left.

Avery walked into his arms and held onto him when they were alone. He had everything he needed, right here, to get him through what was going to happen next.

She’d been right, his mother and sister were strong enough to fight against the man. Now it was his turn and, this time, he wasn’t using fists. This time, he’d go back to using the law.
