BOBBY JO: You remember what you asked me?
The next reply took a little longer.
RUE: I'm moving.
BOBBY JO: Where?
RUE: Somewhere without cell service.
I could see her, sitting at some desk covered in sticky notes with her face in her hands. I decided I’d tortured her about as much as a man should before nine in the morning.
BOBBY JO: Offer still stands.
RUE: What offer?
She knew exactly what offer.
BOBBY JO: Ask me when sober.
Chapter 3
Rue
Iwas in Regina's office located in brick admin anex building of Irondale Highschool, at seven fifteen the next morning with the door shut behind me.
"I hate you."
Regina looked up from her computer. "Good morning to you too, Rue Boo."
I stared at her. "I told that man I had never been kissed."
She picked up her cup of coffee decorated with the Red, White and Brew log and took a quick sip. "I know."
I stopped with my hand still on the doorknob. "How the hell do you know?"
Regina's lips disappeared between her teeth. Quickly, I put two and two, together. "HAMILTON!"
"He is my husband, Rue. Marriage involves information sharing." She pushed a chair toward me with her foot. "Sit down before somebody walks past and thinks I'm counseling you."
I sat, took my glasses off, and pressed both hands over my eyes. "He turned me down, Regina."
"Hamilton said he turned you down because you had three glasses of wine in you."
"Same result."
"Not even close." Regina leaned across her desk. "Most men would have taken that kiss and told the whole city and county by lunch. That man put you in his truck, walked you to your door, and had your car sitting in your driveway before you woke up."
I had noticed the car. I’d also stood in my kitchen for five minutes trying to decide how I felt about it.
"He feels sorry for me," I said.
"He doesn’t feel sorry for you."
"Regina, I am a thirty-two-year-old woman who has never been kissed. That is the definition of a pity situation."
"Show me your phone."
"No."
