Susie tensed.

Am I truly becoming desensitised? Or have I just become really good at surviving?

“Susanna is one of my best students,” Professor Zott simpered, one corner of his moustache curling up in a brief smile. He heaved himself off his chair with a grunt and walked around the desk, his footsteps thudding heavily as he drew close.

He was extremely tall, and as his middle wobbled closer, Susie’s eyes darted down to his crotch where a prominent bulge had already formed. She forced her gaze back up, her heart beating erratically.

Zott’s moustache curled again—he’d seen her looking, and the hungry gleam in his eyes confirmed her fear. He expected her to suck him off in front of the first-years.

He stopped before her, and she shuddered as his meaty hand stroked the side of her face. “Susanna is an excellent role model for the wolves in this room,” he announced, addressing solely the vampire students as if the wolves weren’t there. He grabbed her chin and tilted it up. “This is the kind of wolf I expect you to produce this semester.”

Susie’s eyes watered as she focused on Zott’s clean-shaven chin. His dark eyes were pouring into her, muddying her soul, and it was all she could do not to turn away. He would pull her hair if she did that. Or do something to her tail.

Zott may have been fond of her, but she didn’t dare test his patience. The smallest of things could make him snap, and any amiability he displayed was a tenuous mask.

Zott smiled in satisfaction and released her chin, returning his attention to the class. “Each of you will partner up with a wolf this semester. As there are more wolves than vampires, some of you will be allocated as many as three to your command.”

Susie kept her face carefully blank as a flurry of whispers broke out. The wolves were either nervous or indignant. Some vampires looked pleased at the prospect, others exchanged scowls at the obvious increased workload.

Zott narrowed his eyes at the students and raised his voice. “Listen carefully. The wolves that you are assigned will remain yours until assessment day, during which you will demonstrate your pet’s obedience to simple commands. Sit. Stay. Fetch.” His gaze dropped to Susie, and she could have sworn he licked his lips. “And other commands.”

Susie held her breath until he looked away, and she let out a quiet exhale. The drawn-out tension was getting to her, and her entire body was racked with nerves.

“Today is merely an introduction,” Zott continued, his voice now booming as if he were a stage actor. “This time next week, you will observe as I begin inducting the first-year wolves. You will be expected to pay close attention and take notes. I will assess the tractability of each wolf to form a baseline based on temperament. Every pet is unique and special, but by the end of this process, they will all be exactly the same. Docile. Tractable. Obedient. For those of you who receive a more unruly wolf, your job will be especially challenging, but you need not fear—bonus points will be allocated to those who can curb the behaviour of the more difficult creatures.”

A low snigger met Susie’s ears as one of the vampiresses smirked at her.

Susie’s lips drew back in a brief snarl before she quickly smoothed it away so Zott wouldn’t see.

She would have dearly loved to go over to the vampiress and give her a piece of her mind.

Zott did not reprimand the vampiress. He was a vampire himself, and his favouritism towards the vampire students was a well-known fact. They rarely faced punishment, whilst for wolf shifter students it was almost impossible to avoid.

Susie felt a cool draft and was faintly aware of the low creak of the classroom door opening behind her. She didn’t dare turn around to see who it was, especially as Zott chose that exact moment to place his massive hand on top of her head.

Her stomach twisted.

It’s starting.

“You will teach your wolf not only to obey your commands,” he continued, his voice growing excited as his other hand reached to undo his belt. “But to anticipate them.” Zott’s hand gripped her hair painfully, and her lips parted in a soundless cry.

He pushed a large, fat finger into her mouth, jabbing it down her throat and making her gag.

“And you will teach them their place.” He released her hair and rubbed his obvious erection.

Susie cringed as he began to unlace his trousers.

Breathe, she thought, clutching the tops of her thighs to ground herself. You’ve got this, just breathe. It will be over soon.

Suddenly, a male voice cleared his throat behind her, breaking the thick tension that had filled the room.

Everyone jumped, even Zott, whose entire demeanour changed in an instant—he straightened as if lightning had struck him, his left eye twitching and blinking rapidly. And then he beamed, an inhuman smile directed over the top of Susie at whoever was standing behind her.

“My apologies for the intrusion, Professor Zott,” said a deep, gentlemanly voice that was all too familiar, each note rumbling through her core.

Susie squeezed her eyes shut, avoiding the mirror’s reflection as slow, purposeful footsteps came closer.

Please don’t let it be who I think it is…
