Arken snatched her wrists and pulled her back. She landed awkwardly, sprawled on top of him and trapped in his arms.

She tried to pull free. “Don’t. Just let me go.”

He released her as quickly as if she’d stung him. She remained hovering above, staring down at him in confusion.

Something was wrong. He was behaving…strangely.

The room was too quiet.

She wished he would say something.

Without warning, the door to her room swung open. They snapped their heads to the tall figure standing there. Pointed features, crossed arms, and malice gleaming in his eyes as he took in the sight of them on the bed.

The blood drained from her.

Henrikk.

In the corridor, she glimpsed several of his followers—made vampires, their waxy faces and eerie stillness unmistakeable.

“Well, well, well,” Henrikk mused, “You certainly know how to keep your students busy, Arken.” He gave a low, sinister cackle at their shocked reaction.

Then, to Susie’s horror, Henrikk stepped inside and shut the door, leaving the other vampires outside in the corridor.

The three of them were alone.

Henrikk approached the bed, moving with a slow, predatory assuredness, like a spider closing in on its ensnared prey. “I see you’ve warmed her up for me, Arken. Move aside, now. Let me have a turn at her.”

Panic filled Susie’s senses as King Henrikk approached the bed. She instinctively moved closer to Arken and drew the sheets close to hide her nakedness.

Henrikk’s shadow fell across them.

“I do hope you have not developed serious feelings for this wolf, Arken,” Henrikk said conversationally, making the hair raise on her skin. “You know my law on interracial unions and…relationships.” He drew out the last word, hissing the ‘s’.

Arken did not respond, and for the life of her, Susie couldn’t understand why.

She spoke up on his behalf. “No, Ark—the headmaster does not have feelings for me. This isn’t serious. I’m…just a pet.”

The words hollowed her out.

Henrikk’s ghostly eyes emanated danger as they roamed over her. “And yet…I do not see a collar on you.”

Her skin crawled, and she resisted the urge to touch her neck as Henrikk continued.

“He stated earlier that you are not his pet. That you’re no one of any importance.”

Shit.

She’d forgotten.

“But,” Henrikk continued, savouring the silence between his words, “I could have sworn there was something in the way he beheld you this morning. He tried terribly hard to ignore you in my presence, did he not?”
