“So is this,” she said earnestly. “So are you.”

His hands tightened around her waist as he drew her close. She gasped at the contact of his torso against hers. Solid. Warm. Safe. She placed a hand on his chest and could feel the beat of his heart.

“You know, when I asked you to be my pet,” Arken began, his eyes growing glazed as he caressed her waist, “What I meant was…be mine. Be mine, and only mine.”

Susie shivered at his words, her breath catching as her core throbbed with arousal.

They were moments away from kissing. It would cross a dangerous line—it would not be a casual, meaningless kiss. Susie knew that if Arken kissed her, it would be hot, romantic, and full of the same intense ardour he was regarding her with now.

Such a kiss between a vampire and a wolf was forbidden. No one would know, but it would open the door to a realm of possibilities, none of which would end well for either of them.

There was no guarantee she wouldn’t regret it. In fact, it was guaranteed that if they went down this path, they would both live to regret it very much.

But she wanted it. And she wanted to give herself permission to ask for it.

She might have turned away then, might have laughed it off and changed the subject, busying herself with stacking books and pretending she was aloof. Except, she was sure he wanted this too.

“Arken, please,” she whispered.

He gave a small sigh of resignation, and her heart fell as he shook his head. He lifted his hands to cup her face. “I need to talk to you about Henrikk, and the pike—”

“Shh.” Susie pressed a finger to his lips and gave him a faint smile. She didn’t want to talk about the King right now. Or the damn pike. There was enough darkness in the world to consume them both. Here, in her bedroom, in Arken’s arms, she finally felt safe. She wanted to forget the rest of the world. Her toes were aching from leaning up to reach him, but she waited on the precipice for Arken to join her. “Just kiss me, Arken.”

He opened his mouth as if to argue, but no words came out.

Alarm flashed in his eyes for the briefest of seconds. Before she could ask him about it, his eyes grew hooded, and some of the concern etched on his face faded as longing darkened his eyes.

Instead of speaking, he sucked on the finger she had pressed to his lips.

Another shiver travelled through her, racing down her spine, and hitting her core like a thunderclap.

Arken’s eyes were so dark they were almost black as he sucked on her finger, slowly, sensually, the tips of his fangs grazing her skin.

She was melting. This was bliss.

He held eye contact as he repeated the motion, and no one had ever looked more handsome and alluring.

A whimper escaped Susie as her body turned to jelly. Before she could recover from the burning need he’d awakened in her, his fingers combed into her hair, grasping handfuls as he dipped his head and pressed his lips against hers.

He was kissing her.

And it was everything, shattering all expectations.

Chapter 34

Yes

Susie

Kissing Arken was like fire.

There was a moment when his lips met hers that time stood still.

It didn’t last long. His hands were threaded in her hair, and the feel of his long fingers brushing her scalp and applying tension on her hair as he combed it back was intoxicating.

Yes. This. More of this.

He deepened the kiss, slow and full of intention, as if kissing her was the most important thing—the only thing that mattered.
