“We both did what we had to,” Kira whispered, shutting her eyes as a tear ran down her cheek and wetted his hand.

Nathaniel’s jaw clenched. He was starting to lose his nerve, and his mind struggling with the impossible dilemma of what to do. How could he follow through with the plan? The first phase—situate Kira so she could raise a secret army of wolves—was all under control. But as for the second phase, how could he give Kira up to his father? Especially knowing the abuse she would undoubtedly suffer at his hands. His stomach twisted and knotted sickeningly.

“We’ve come so far,” Kira whispered, “Don’t back out now.”

Nathaniel didn’t say anything.

Kira sat up suddenly. She placed her hands on his shoulders and sat astride his lap. “I have an idea,” she said with a forced cheerfulness he suspected was for his benefit, “Of how we can be together.”

He forced himself to smile as well. “Go on.”

“We’ll continue with the plan, just as we agreed. I’ll do whatever it takes. And when all of this is over…and your father is slain…and you’re married to Gloria…” her voice wavered ever so slightly, “I will rule. My life will belong to the people. But my heart will belong to you. I will be your mistress.”

Nathaniel flinched. Whatever names they used in the bedroom—even publicly—was between the two of them.

“You deserve better than that,” he croaked. “You deserve love.”

Kira smiled at him coyly with a raised eyebrow. “And I have it, don’t I? Your love?”

A smile crept across his face. “Yes, pet. You certainly do. Now, and forever.” He lifted her hand to his lips and kissed it as he met her gaze. “I love you with every breath.”

“And I love you.” Kira interlocked her fingers with his and squeezed them tightly, as if she had no intention of ever letting go. “Although, technically, I’ll be the ruler, so that will make you my mistress.”

“I have no problem with that,” he smiled, even though the guilt welling up in him was almost too much to bear.

She gave him a kiss on the cheek, the light-hearted peck drawing another smile from him as she touched his face. “Promise me something, Nathaniel. That when all of this is over…we’ll be together. Please, tell me that much is true, because if I know that, then I think I can endure just about anything.”

Nathaniel forced himself not to grimace. He knew perfectly well what it was Kira was nervous about enduring—his father’s advances.

“I promise,” he said stiffly, hating himself for the hardships ahead of her.

Kira’s eyes were bright with hope for the future, but he couldn’t stop the dread eating away at the edge of his happiness.

“Hey,” she whispered, smoothing back his hair. “Everything will be all right.”

Her expression was soft, and her encouragement coaxed a smile from him. “I should be the one reassuring you.”

“We can reassure each other. Now, stop moping. I want to play.”

“Do you, now?”

“Yes.” Her eyes lit up with mischief as she settled onto him, a move that squished her naked breasts against his chest.

And then she leant her head against the side of his neck and nuzzled him, the gentle graze of her face against his throat igniting a wild roaring flame. A soft groan escaped him as she licked his throat, a long, damp swipe that instantly made his uneasiness vanish.

Kira grinned at him as she grinded her clit against him, wetting his thigh.

He couldn’t help it, he was already hard. He groaned again as she ran her hands through his hair, mussing it as she rubbed herself against him again, this time coating his balls.

“Fuck,” he gasped.

Kira grinned at him, and before he knew it, she’d hopped off the bed and was prancing across the room, looking lighter and happier than he’d ever seen her. “I’m going to have a shower.”

Nathaniel was stunned.

She’s leaving me here? Like this?

His hardened cock ached from her denial.
