“Very good,” beamed the priest. “And do you, Prince Nathaniel, take this woman—”

“Stop,” called Henrikk lazily, causing the priest to flinch. “I have a wedding gift for my son. I have been waiting for an appropriate time to present it.” He snapped his fingers. “Now seems good.”

Nathaniel frowned as Victoria and Felix emerged from a side door near the dais, dragging a woman with bronze skin and dark brown hair between them.

His blood turned cold when he recognised Kira. Her normally glowing brown skin was dull, her legs unsteady as she walked. Her expression was taut as she gazed around blearily. Her eyes widened as she took in the large audience. As she turned her head, white-hot anger sparked in him as he saw her blackened eye and the bite marks on her neck.

“What have you done to her?” Nathaniel demanded furiously, releasing Gloria as he ran to Kira.

“Nathaniel?” Kira gasped, spotting him for the first time.

He leapt off the dais and shoved Felix away, pulling Kira into his arms. “Shh, everything will be all right,” he whispered, kissing her forehead as fear pooled inside him.

“I’ve done nothing to her—yet,” Henrikk said loudly, giving a dismissive wave. “What you see is merely some minor damage from transit. Victoria had my permission to sample the goods, didn’t you, my dear?”

“Yes, Your Majesty,” Victoria said.

“You did so well to bring her to me.” Henrikk patted the seat beside him. It was the chair that a queen should have occupied, one that had sat empty for many years. “Come, sit by me.”

Victoria released Kira and leapt up the dais steps nimbly and sat down, her eyes shining as she smiled in satisfaction.

“The plug,” Kira whispered, clutching at the front of his shirt. “It’s silver. They plugged me.”

Horrified, Nathaniel’s hand darted around to remove it. How dare they hurt Kira? How dare they—

His fingertips brushed the plug, but before he could get a hold of it, Henrikk’s guards seized them and wrenched them apart.

“Nathaniel!” Kira screamed at the same time that he yelled her name.

“Star-crossed lovers,” Henrikk said fondly to the audience. He rose from his throne and swept his ermine cloak back as he approached. “How romantic! Nathaniel, you have my full blessing for your marriage to Gloria, as well as your coronation. But before you rise to manhood and become our new glorious leader, allow a father to impart a final lesson of wisdom to his son.”

Nathaniel’s body turned cold like stone as his father’s hands parted his robes and began unbuckling his belt.

“F-father?” he gasped, realising exactly what the king had in mind.

Henrikk glided down the steps, removing his belt and undoing the lace fastenings of his trousers. “I was disappointed to hear you circumvented my orders. I have heard several disturbing reports from Victoria on your conduct. Sharing your royal blood with those beneath you. Becoming overly attached to wolves—this female in particular.”

“Her name is Kira,” Nathaniel growled.

Henrikk’s eyes flashed. “She is a pet, designed for feeding and fucking, nothing more. It is time you learnt that lesson, my boy. It is a mistake to fall in love with a creature so inferior.”

Nathaniel’s insides burnt with fear and rage as he struggled against the guard, an anguished yell tearing from his throat as the guards holding Kira forced her to the ground.

“Father!” Nathaniel shouted, wishing desperately that he would show mercy. But he knew his father well enough to know that he considered mercy a weakness.

Henrikk glanced back, fisting his cock with one hand as he hovered above Kira. “I am at my wits’ end, Nathaniel. I have warned you before. But I am confident that this is a lesson you will never forget. You will thank me for this one day.”

“No!” Nathaniel shouted, his muscles screaming as he threw himself forward. The guards jerked him back, and a fist collided with his temple, causing his world to go black.

Nathaniel woke to the sound of the courtiers’ hushed whispers rippling through the room, and he peeked an eye open to see the crowd vying close so they could see better. He groaned.

What happened? What…

Fear hit him as his memory returned.

Kira!

Henrikk spoke near him. “Is he awake? Good. Ensure he watches. I will begin now.”
