“A steel plug.”
“Wrong. The plugs Nathaniel had made for you were made of steel. I know—I checked. The jeweller was very talkative once I bit his neck.”
Kira tensed. “Is he alive?”
“Probably. Who cares? He’s a human,” Victoria said irritably. “My point is, Nathaniel was ordered by his father to plug you with silver. And as the myth goes, wolves are sensitive to the metal. Nathaniel was meant to keep you plugged with silver so you wouldn’t be able to use any magic.” Her eyes narrowed. “But as I saw in the foyer the other day, he’s been slack.”
Kira’s stomach knotted as Victoria rose.
“Wh-what are you doing?” she snapped, her blood freezing as Victoria walked around her. She sent out her magic, connecting to Victoria and Felix’s mind, thick gentle persuasion that coaxed them to see things her way.
Victoria paused. “I am so sorry, sweetie. I know this is not what you want. But you’ll come round.”
Shit.
It wasn’t enough.
Victoria waggled her index finger at her. “Ah-ah-ah. No more magic for you. Now, hold still while I plug you. We’re already very late. You don’t want to miss the moment when Nat and Gloria say, ‘I do’, do you?”
Kira struggled against Felix’s hold, focusing her magic on him. His hold loosened, and she almost managed to throw him off, but Victoria was fast and precise in her movements as she darted behind Kira and pushed the plug in. It was lubricated, and although it slid smoothly into her ass, the pressure felt wrong, and the cool silver seared her insides in a way the other plugs never had.
Kira cried out in pain and despair as her insides burnt, her magic disintegrating as if it had never been. As Felix dragged her up, she tried but failed to morph.
It was over.
Chapter 39
Deception
Kira
Kira tried to think rationally as Victoria led her up the stairs with Felix bringing up the rear. The couple had fed on her before leaving Nathaniel’s room, and it left her feeling tired as she trudged up the steps.
They’d warned her not to shout, and Victoria held the gag Nathaniel had so often used on her in warning.
“It’s such an ugly thing,” she said regretfully, “But I don’t want any hiccups.”
“I won’t cause trouble,” Kira assured her quickly. “I’ll come quietly, I promise. I want to go to the wedding too.”
She had to find a way to remove the plug, or any opportunity to get away from Victoria. Once she was gagged, she’d lose her ability to talk, as well as any chance of talking herself out of this situation.
Thankfully, Victoria only made her wear the collar, the ball gag hanging threateningly from it.
Kira followed Victoria quietly up the dorm stairs, resisting the urge to call for help from the students they passed. It was a sad testament to the way wolves were treated that no one questioned the black eye Felix had given her or the fresh bite marks on her neck that still oozed blood.
Victoria was in good spirits after feeding, at least, and as they reached the wolf dorms, Kira sensed an opportunity.
“Victoria, wait.”
The vampiress sighed and stopped. “What?”
“I can’t go to the wedding like this. Look at my shoes. They’re so muddy.”
“Quit stalling,” said Felix.
Kira ignored him, focusing her attention on Victoria, who seemed conflicted as she eyed her shoes.
“Please, it’s so embarrassing,” she added, adopting a polite tone she’d almost never used with Nathaniel, “May I change them? If Henrikk sees me like this, he might not want me, and you don’t want that. Not if you want to be Queen Consort.”
