“There,” he announced once it was fully seated.
“You’re an assho—”
Her voice cut off as he tapped the plug sharply, making her wince.
“You were saying?” he mused.
Kira inhaled a steadying breath and fixed him with a glare. “Ass. Hole.”
He laughed and leant back on his seat with an arm stretched lazily over the backrest, looking as pleased as a cat who’d gotten the cream.
Kira sank slowly back onto her seat, trying not to let it show on her face when the plug inevitably pushed up into her.
Nathaniel’s lip twitched as if he knew. It wasn’t long before he had her sitting back on his lap.
“I’m sorry the plug doesn’t match your dress, but the steel has significance. One day, perhaps I’ll give you one made of gold.”
Kira snorted through the gag.
“That’s what you’re sorry about? Material choice?”
“I’m sorry about a lot of things,” he whispered in her ear, pressing himself close so she felt his erection pressing against her rear. “But never about plugging you.”
The sun was setting when they arrived at the club. The multi-storey building had a plum-coloured exterior and tall, shuttered windows with seductive, bright red trimmings.
There was a long line of people waiting to be let in, most of whom were vampires in glamorous outfits. The few wolves present were scantily dressed, and most were kneeling on the ground or sitting obediently in their wolf form.
“It seems I overdressed you,” Nathaniel mused as they passed a shifter wearing nothing at all except a ball gag that was eerily similar to hers.
“You wish,” Kira scoffed. Secretly, she was grudgingly grateful for the dress Nathaniel had chosen for her; it was much more on par with what the vampires were wearing than the daring strips of leather some wolves wore.
Deep music pulsed from within the building, making Kira feel even more jittery and anxious. She still had no idea how Nathaniel expected her to help win Gloria over. Did he expect her to use her magic to make Gloria fall in love with him? Because even if such a thing was possible, she wasn’t sure if she’d be able to bring herself to do that.
Whatever he had planned, Kira hoped she would be up to the task. She was trying to ignore the jealousy and hurt welling in her chest, but her heart beat rapidly, outmatching the steady blood-pounding music.
“There are a lot of people here,” she commented. The prospect of joining the back of the very long line was not appealing.
“Most of them won’t be allowed in,” Nathaniel replied. “The club is very exclusive. Come.”
He led her to the front of the queue, where a muscled wolf bouncer was standing with arms crossed and a bored expression. His beady eyes widened when he recognised them.
“Prince Nathaniel,” he greeted, hurriedly unclipping the red rope barrier from the bollard.
He bowed low as Nathaniel passed, Kira following close behind.
“Nice,” she said, wishing she could remove the gag just to smirk at Nathaniel. “That was quite the reception. Guess you’re a regular here.”
Nathaniel didn’t take the bait, but at least he had the courage to meet her gaze, if only for a moment. “I used to be.”
Kira’s heart plummeted, even though there was nothing wrong with what he’d said. Of course Nathaniel had come here. As per his father’s wishes, he’d courted Gloria for years. She would like to have reassured herself that it was in the past, except here he was, dressed in his finest with a ring box tucked away in his inside pocket.
Kira squeezed her eyes shut as bitter anger swirled inside her like acid, shielding her mind and suspending her magic so Nathaniel wouldn’t feel how utterly wretched that made her feel.
Keep your shit together, Kira.
The nightclub was dark and eerily lit with magical lights that floated through the room like gold and purple fireflies. Rather than one single, open area like she’d expected, there were several rooms, all connected in a long twisting series by open archways and darkened, hairpin corridors.
Black-and-white checkered floor tiles added to her disorientation as they moved from room to room, ignoring the tight, circular stairwells with gold bannisters in favour of continuing deeper through the maze.
