As I pack my things into my bag, there’s a loud knock on the door. Someone really wants to be let in. I hear Gary’s muffled voice saying he’ll get it.

A moment later, I hear raised voices. Gary arguing with someone.

I poke my head out of the doorframe to check who it is, hoping in the pit of my stomach it isn’t the man I think it is.

Nope. I’m right.

There’s Bishop.

Because of his extreme height, my ex is standing over Gary, practically leaning over him. But my host is not letting their height differences affect him in any way; he’s got a threatening finger poking in the direction of Bishop’s face.

“She’s leaving now, you know.”

“I want to see her,” Bishop replies quietly. He hasn’t noticed me peeking around the corner.

“After the way you’ve treated her? Not likely.”

Wow, go on Gary. You go, girl.

Bishop stares him down in disbelief. He doesn’t get talked to like this much, that’s for sure. “What would you know?”

“I know enough for you to get the hell out of my house.”

“It’s okay, Gary,” I finally speak up. “I’ll talk to him. For a moment.”

Both their faces turn in my direction. Gary looks at me in concern. Bishop looks at me like a man in the desert looking at water.

“I’ll give you a minute,” Gary says, resigned. “But I’ll be in my room if you need me, Chloe.”

He flashes a warning look at Bishop as he passes the man.

I step into Gary’s living room and cross my arms at Bishop.

“Go on,” I request him sternly. “Tell me why you’re here. It better be good, or I’m shutting that door on your face.”

CHLOE

“So, this is the gay guy’s place, then?” Bishop asks as he strolls into the living room and glances around.

“It’s Gary’s place, yeah,” I reply with a sigh. “So don’t touch anything.”

Bishop raises his hands in mock surrender. “I wasn’t going to.”

“Good,” I say. I’m not going to offer him a seat. He’s not going to be here for long. I just want to know why he’s come all this way. It really better be freaking good. “You’re not here to apologize, are you?”

“No.”

“Great.”

He can leave now.

“It’s not why I’m here. But before you should say anything with that pretty mouth of yours, I’ve got something to give you.”

I’m taken aback. “Me?”

He retreats back out the front door and returns a moment later holding a black guitar case. Bishop offers it to me.
