Chloe shakes her head. “No.”

“Come on, it’ll be my secret.”

There’s a long pause as she mulls it over. She takes in a deep breath.

“I’ve actually written a song about you,” she says.

“No way.”

“Yep.”

“Well, now you’ve got to show me.”

“It’s a work in progress,” she says.

“I don’t care. Show it to me.”

She reaches into her bedside drawer and takes out a notepad. I recognize the one as the same that she brings to high school every day. The one she doesn’t let anyone else look inside.

So that’s what is in it. Songs.

She flips to a page and then carefully and cautiously hands it over to me.

“Promise you won’t laugh at me,” she says.

“I would never do that.”

“Promise.”

“I promise, Chloe. I wouldn’t break a promise to you.”

I read the whole thing. Once. And then again.

I don’t say a word until I’m completely finished. Chloe watches me for my reaction with bated breath. I think I’m the first person she’s ever shown her lyrics to.
