The idea didn’t sit right with her, even though she had no claim to Monroe.

It was hard to even be in the same room with her and not want to reach out and connect their bodies in some way. A quick press of their hands. A soft kiss on the cheek. Even just the ability to lean against Monroe’s solid frame, finding comfort in it.

She blew out a breath when Monroe shot her a thankful look as she walked Maisie out of the room.

God, Blake was in so much trouble.

Blake had just pulled into her driveway when her phone chimed.

Monroe Lockhart - 9:05 p.m.

I’m in the backyard if you want to join me.

Anticipation fluttered in her belly.

Blake Bettencourt - 9:05 p.m.

Were you waiting to see when I got home?

Monroe Lockhart - 9:05 p.m.

I can hear your truck coming from a mile away. Maisie also would not stop talking about how she got to ride in it today . . .

Blake bit her lip. She’d been hoping that she’d get to see Monroe tonight, but given the events of the day, she hadn’t been holding her breath.

And she tried not to let it mean something that, after a difficult day, Monroe was reaching out to her. They’d seen one another more days this week than not, which meant that it would have been more unexpected if they hadn’t found their way to one another.

Blake Bettencourt - 9:05 p.m.

My point still stands

She didn’t bother going through her own house. Instead, she walked through the tree-lined perimeter that separated their yards.

It was almost August, and night had settled fully across the sky, the stars already shining brightly overhead. She could see that the fairy lights were on along Monroe’s deck, giving everything the hazy glow that she loved.

Before she rounded the side of the house, she could hear music playing. It was a tune that she couldn’t name but had definitely heard before.

Blake was trying to figure out what it was when she popped around the side of the deck, her hand braced on the railing.

She stopped in her tracks.

Monroe was leaning back, her arms extended along the edge of the hot tub. Her eyes were closed, a relaxed smile on her face. Blake could see her breasts bobbing at the waterline, beckoning her to come closer.

Blake cleared her throat to announce her arrival before walking up the steps. “I didn’t dress for the occasion.”

Monroe’s eyes fluttered open and leveled her with a look that made Blake’s stomach swoop dangerously low. “You didn’t need to.”

“Let me just—”

Monroe cut her off. “Take off your clothes and join me? That’s exactly what I was thinking.”

Blake looked around the backyard, which was impressively private given that there were homes twenty feet away in both directions.

She didn’t do things like this. Strip down naked and get in a hot tub with a woman she’d been having sex with all week.

But knowing that didn’t seem to matter, as she realized that she was already pulling off her shirt.

Monroe eyed her hungrily, which only made Blake undress faster.
