And then again last night.

But that was fine, right?

She’d never had great sex before, so it was probably just a natural consequence of not being able to keep her hands off Monroe.

She tapped her pen against her metal desk, trying not to think too deeply about it.

Which was easier said than done. Whenever her mind drifted for even a second, she realized that Monroe was its destination.

In Blake’s defense, it’s not like she expected them to have sex every time they saw one another, but it also didn’t hurt that Maisie went to sleep before eight o’clock every night, leaving the two of them to their own devices.

Blake couldn’t help that she’d needed to borrow a cup of sugar on Monday night, when she’d suddenly felt the need to bake cookies.

With her detour, she still hadn’t gotten around to making them.

And she couldn’t help that on Wednesday, she’d asked Monroe—her friend Monroe—what she and Maisie had been planning for dinner since Blake didn’t have dance classes that night.

Blake had become addicted to the fluttery feeling that took up residence in her stomach whenever they were alone together. Now, she knew exactly where it could lead.

Less than a week ago, the feeling had been one of possibility. Now? It was one of promise.

She knew what it felt like to have Monroe’s eyes on her. Monroe’s hands tracing patterns across her skin. Monroe’s mouth nestled between her legs while Blake bit into a pillow to stop from screaming out.

She crossed her legs underneath her desk at the memory and was grateful for the distraction when her phone vibrated.

Only—

She connected the call quickly. “Monroe?”

It was a surprise that she was calling, though definitely not an unwelcome one.

Monroe was in Austin today, meeting with a startup that had expressed interest in having a mural painted in their new office.

Along with her show, Monroe was always in communication with some brand or “putting feelers out” or sharing content on her professional Instagram.

Blake appreciated the hustle immensely.

She also found it incredibly sexy, the way that Monroe so doggedly set out to achieve things and then just . . . did them. And though she was always downplaying the magnitude of the career she’d built, the mention of multimillion-dollar brands said in a completely casual way was the opposite of nothing.

This morning, Blake had slipped back to her own house before the sun had come up. Monroe generally stayed in bed for a little while longer, but she’d gotten up with Blake to shower and get ready. She’d told Blake that once she’d dropped Maisie off at daycare, she’d be driving ninety minutes to the city to have a late-morning meeting with the office manager but that she’d be back in time to pick Maisie up.

Monroe’s slightly panicked voice filtered through the phone. “Hey. I’m so sorry to call you, but Maisie’s daycare called.”

Panic seized Blake at the idea that something had happened to Maisie. “Is everything okay?”

She could hear that Monroe was in the car, probably already driving back. “Maisie’s fine physically. She apparently punched a kid at daycare. I’m not exactly sure why. When I talked to Maisie, she said, and I quote, ‘He had it comin’,’ like she was some pint-size Mafia boss.”

The incredulity in Monroe’s voice was apparent, even though the undercurrent of fear was undeniable.

Monroe went on, “I called Denny, but he didn’t answer, so I was wondering if you could pick up Maisie for me? I hate to ask, but they have a zero tolerance policy, meaning she has to go home for the rest of the day. Then, I need to have a meeting with them to discuss her behavior and see how we move forward.” She sighed. “I should be back in a little over an hour.”

Blake was already standing up and reaching for her car keys. “You can always call me.”

She hoped that Monroe realized that, and she tried not to take it personally that Blake hadn’t been her first call.

“I know,” Monroe said, her voice soft through the phone. “But things are different now. I didn’t want to overcomplicate things between us. I don’t want you to feel obligated to do things for me because . . .”

She didn’t finish her train of thought, even though Blake knew that it was because they’d started sleeping together. Which Blake felt was all the more reason that Monroe should call her for anything, but it was clear that Monroe wasn’t of the same opinion.
