“Last I checked, there was no sleeping involved. Yes, I fucked her. Not because I wanted her but because I knew that it would be the only way to get it through my brother’s fucking head,” I argue.

“That doesn’t make it right!”

“I never said it did. Do you think I liked hurting my brother? That I didn’t think about what would happen if I went through with it? It fucking weighed on me then, and it still does. He’s my fucking brother, and I love him. I miss him in ways I can’t describe, but I would not go back in time and change what I did. I did it for a reason, and it got the outcome that was needed.”

He shakes his head in disgust. “You’re a fucking idiot.”

“Can’t argue with you there.”

“He will never forgive you. None of us will.”

“I don’t need your forgiveness. I never have,” I tell him bluntly.

“Are you two done?” Mav asks, making us turn toward him.

“How long have you been there?” Rebel asks.

“Long enough to know you’re a dick,” Mav mutters as he comes to sit down with us. “Remi told you that his issues with Hades aren’t yours to take on. You were ordered to play nice.”

“I am playing nice,” Rebel mutters.

Mav scoffs. “By attacking him about the past? A past that has nothing to do with you? Be so fucking for real right now.”

Rebel looks away, jaw clenched.

“You need to lock that shit down before Remi gets here because if he finds out you’re jeopardizing this shit, he will have your ass,” Mav tells him.

“Remi’s coming?” I cut in, heart racing.

Mav looks over at me, frowning. “Yeah, did Reaper not tell you?”

“I knew there was a chance, but it hadn’t been confirmed.”

Mav nods. “He will be here. Maybe it will force you two to hash out your shit and let things go.”

I scoff. “As nice as that sounds, we both know he won’t ever let his grudge go.”

“You never know. Stranger things have happened,” Mav points out.

“Enough about our bullshit. Tell me what you two found or if you’ve found anything so far.”

Mav looks over at Rebel. “You first.”

“Dude is cocky and doesn’t pay attention to those around him. He’s also racist as fuck. The head landscaper is Hispanic, born and raised here, family has been here forever, and yet Dansworth treats him like he came over here yesterday and doesn’t speak English. The guy fucking hates him, and he had no problem spilling what he knows about Dansworth. Apparently, the dumbass cut his hand in front of José so he could go bother Evelyn. Said that he was going to teach a bitch a lesson. Scare her out of her mind. José said it looked like he got off on the idea of scaring her.”

My fists clench when he mentions Evelyn.

We knew it was intentional, but the fact he got sick satisfaction out of it…doesn’t sit right with me.

“Oh, and his assistant called me into the house. I guess there was some issue with one of the bank routing numbers for my paycheck, and they couldn’t tell what it was. I was able to place a camera right under the lip on the front of his desk and one on a picture frame by the living room. I texted Trigger and told him to activate them.”

“Did you look at the photo? Maybe see who the chick was?” Mav asks.

Rebel winces. “Wavy blonde hair, blue eyes, younger than him.”

“Sounds like his daughter,” I add.

Rebel’s eyes narrow. “I haven’t seen her around. Surely if he had a kid, she would be around there somewhere.”
