“Yeah, I need to head to the hospital to get Evelyn.”
Mav smirks. “Have fun playing house with your girl who isn’t your girl.”
“Fuck you,” I say over my shoulder as I head for the door, his laughter following me.
She’s not mine. She can’t be. Right?
Evelyn
“Dr. Kingston.”
I look over my shoulder and watch as Preston walks toward me with a frown on his face.
“Walk with me. I was just headed to the restroom.”
He shakes his head. “I’m sorry, but this can’t wait. Jackie told me to come find you immediately. We have a high-profile patient that needs your assistance immediately.”
I stop in my tracks and give him my full attention. “Where’s Pembrooke? This is the type of shit he loves.”
Which is true. Honestly, sometimes I wonder why he bothered to become a doctor. The man is better suited for politics the way he likes to work a room.
Preston winces. “He’s not answering his pages, but the patient specifically asked for you.”
I tip my head back and groan. “Goddammit, my bladder feels like it’s about to explode,” I mutter.
“If you hurry, I won’t tell,” he murmurs.
“Bless you.”
Quickly I rush down the hall and into the bathroom, where I do my business. After washing my hands, I meet Preston back in the hall.
“What can you tell me?” I ask as I follow him toward the patient.
“It’s a hand laceration. Not that deep but bad enough to need stitches.”
“Drunk on the Strip?”
He shakes his head. “No, he wouldn’t tell the intake nurses what happened.”
“Fantastic,” I sigh.
As soon as I step into the room, my whole body locks up when I see who the patient is.
Mayor William Dansworth.
The bane of my brother’s existence.
Natalie’s abuser.
The club’s number one enemy.
A smarmy smile covers his face.
“Dr. Kingston, it’s a pleasure to meet you. I’d shake your hand, but I’m sure you understand.”
I offer him a forced smile. “Of course.”
Robotically, I disinfect my hands and slip on a pair of gloves from the rack next to the door. With heavy feet, I approach him and take his hand in mine.
