We weren’t going anywhere until I decided we were.
I’d deal with Hector later. Right now, I had something more important to do.
I looked down at Trumai, who was staring up at me with wide, curious eyes.
“Let’s go show Mommy,” I said softly.
I unlocked the master-bedroom door and stepped inside.
Truth was awake now, sitting up in bed with her arms wrapped around her knees, her eyes red and swollen like she’d been crying.
She looked up when I walked in, and her gaze went immediately to Trumai in my arms.
“Give her to me.” Her voice was hoarse and raw.
“She’s fine,” I said calmly. “I just needed to borrow her for a little while.”
“Give her to me.”
I crossed the room and sat on the edge of the bed, still holding Trumai. Truth reached for her, but I shifted slightly, keeping the baby just out of reach.
“I have something to show you first,” I said.
Truth’s eyes narrowed. “Kaisen, I swear to God—”
“I had the DNA test done.” I pulled the folded page from my pocket and held it out to her. “I told you she was mine.”
Truth stared at the paper like it was a snake.
“Take it,” I said.
She snatched it from my hand, her fingers trembling, and unfolded it.
I watched her face as she read.
Watched the confusion.
The devastation.
The disbelief.
“This—this doesn’t make sense,” she whispered. “This says—”
“It says I’m her father.” I kept my voice calm, steady, like I was explaining something simple. “It says exactly what I’ve been telling you all along. She’s mine, Truth. She’s ours.”
“No.” Truth shook her head, her hands shaking so hard the paper rattled. “No, this—where’s the rest of it? Where’s the full report?”
“That is the full report.”
“Bullshit.” She looked up at me, her eyes blazing. “I want Dr. Broussard to look at this. I want her to explain it to me. I want—”
“You think she’s going to tell you the truth? You think Amai doesn’t have her in his pocket, just like he has everyone else?”
“That’s not—”
“He lied to you, Truth.” I leaned forward, my voice dropping. “He lied to you about the baby. He lied to you about me. He’s been lying to you from the beginning, and you’ve been so desperate to believe him that you didn’t see it.”
“Stop.” Her voice cracked. “Just stop.”
