“You showed me a version of yourself,” I shot back. “You hid the rest. Just like everyone else.”
“Because I knew you weren’t ready to see it yet.” His voice softened again, and it was worse than the anger. Worse than the coldness. “But you will be. Once we’re settled. Once you see how good this can be—how good we can be—you’ll understand.”
I wanted to scream.
“Tru needs her pediatrician,” I said, my voice shaking. “She needs her vaccinations. She needs—”
“I have it all figured out,” Kaisen interrupted. “She’ll have everything she needs. A doctor. Medicine. Toys. Books. Everything. You just need to trust the process, Truth.”
“Trust the process?” I repeated, my voice rising. “You kidnapped us, Kaisen! There is no process! There’s just you losing your fucking mind!”
His expression didn’t change.
That was the worst part.
He didn’t get angry. He didn’t get defensive.
He just looked at me with that calm, unshakable certainty, like I was a child throwing a tantrum and he was the patient adult waiting for me to tire myself out.
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.
That’s what he was.
One moment, he was the man who’d I confided in at one point. The man who’d brought soup to my mama’s house during my first trimester.
And the next, he was this.
Cold. Calculating. Delusional.
“Come inside,” he said again, holding out his hand. “It’s late. You need to rest.”
I didn’t move.
“Truth.” His voice hardened. “Come. Inside.”
I looked down at Trumai, her small face scrunched up and red from crying, and I felt something break inside me.
I couldn’t fight him.
Not here. Not now.
Not when I was holding my daughter and standing on a boat in the middle of nowhere with no way to call for help.
I walked past him, my shoulder brushing his, and stepped through the door into the cabin.
The warmth hit me immediately, along with the smell of lavender and something faintly chemical—cleaning solution, maybe.
I didn’t look at him.
I just kept walking.
The master bedroom was at the end of a narrow hallway, past a galley kitchen that looked like it belonged in a luxury apartment and a living area with leather furniture and soft lighting.
Everything was clean. Expensive. Prepared.
Kaisen opened the door and stepped aside, gesturing for me to enter.
I walked in slowly, my eyes scanning the room.
