Still, I shook my head.
“I doubt it. I don’t think he’s mad at me anymore.”
“Oh my god! Just have sex then!”
“Thirty minutes ago, you were ready to punch him in the throat.”
“Then he stalked you and groveled. Besides, I think he’s good for you.”
“You do? Why?”
“Because he’s strong enough to handle you.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?”
“Babe, you are stubborn and headstrong, and I love that about you. But you need a man who’s not afraid to tell you to sit your ass down and let him handle things.”
The idea had merit.
I stood up and offered Lainey my wine glass.
She shook her head, then when I moved toward the kitchen with it, she said, “Well, maybe. Just leave it, in case I change my mind.”
I set the glass on a coaster on the end table beside her chair, then kissed the top of her head. “Okay, I’m going to go home and get Dora, then head over to his place.”
“Call me tomorrow. I want all the dirty details.”
“I think you’re getting ahead of yourself.”
Her sing-song voice was back. “We’ll see.”
“Love you!” I called as I walked out the door.
“Love you, too! Good luck!”

Kristy: Leaving Lainey’s now.
I’d almost parked on the street outside Lainey’s and waited for her, but thought better of it.
I’d fucked up enough today already.
Me: See you soon.
I half-expected her to stand me up. I’d probably deserve it. But I needed to apologize and hear her say she forgave me, so if she didn’t show, I was going to her house.
Fortunately, she knocked on my front door twenty minutes later.
She was wearing the same dark jeans that accentuated her ass and pink t-shirt with the peekaboo cleavage that she’d had on earlier and looked just as beautiful.
“Hi,” I said as I stepped aside to let her and Dora pass through. “Please come in.”
The beagle’s butt wiggled a hundred miles an hour when she walked inside.
“She’s happy to see you,” Kristy commented.
