“Me neither, but I already told you that.” He tilted his head and said, “I just need to know one thing: do you see a future for us?”

Just once, I wished I was a better liar. But alas, I wasn’t, so I opted for the ugly truth.

“I don’t know.”

Now what the hell am I supposed to do?

I could act like I was okay with that, but I’d be lying to myself if I did.

With a sad smile, I told her, “I don’t think we should see each other again until you do know.”

“So, that’s it? I don’t want to call you my boyfriend, so we’re done?”

“I wish you could hear the irony in that statement. What exactly is ‘done’ if we’re not in a relationship?”

“I don’t understand why we can’t just keep things the way they are.”

“Because I want to go to weddings with you! I want to think about a future with you. If this isn’t going anywhere, I’d rather we just end it now before I fall any deeper in love with you.”

She froze, and I knew I’d gone too far by admitting I’d fallen for her.

I could try to backtrack, but what would be the point? If there wasn’t a future with her, then I needed to let her go.

Chapter Twenty-Eight

Kristy

I wasn’t sure how to process Justin ending things. I’d never been on the receiving end of a breakup before.

My pride wanted me to act like it was no big deal, but the truth was, I was heartbroken.

The very thing I’d been trying to avoid my whole life was now consuming me.

Still, I tried to keep a brave face for everyone.

“Our timing just wasn’t right,” I told Lainey on Wednesday at our next baking session.

“What does that mean? It’s not like you’re at different places in life—like you’re going to school and he’s in the Navy.”

“He wants more from me than I’m capable of giving right now.”

“Did you schedule an appointment with a therapist?”

“Yeah, my first appointment is Friday; although I don’t know if I’m going to keep it. I mean, what’s the point? We’re not seeing each other anymore.”

“How about so you’ll be ready when the next great guy comes along?”

“I mean, I guess.”

Although I didn’t see that happening anytime soon—if ever. Justin had set the bar high.

“I can’t believe you didn’t call me. So, what have you been doing since Sunday?”

“Sleeping. Eating junk food. Watching stupid rom-coms and bawling my eyes out.”
