Josie set my drink on the bar, along with a glass with clear liquid and a lime.

“Hey, will you take this gin and tonic to Justin? Mr. Berber bought him a drink, and I haven’t had a chance to deliver it to him.”

“Doesn’t Mr. Berber want to give it to him?”

“No, he left. But I promised I’d make sure he got it, and I’m slammed.” She nodded in the direction Justin had been standing a few seconds ago. “Besides, it looks like someone is trying to move in on him. You need to make sure Emily knows what’s up.”

That’s who that is.

I hadn’t seen Emily Morgan since high school graduation. She definitely hadn’t peaked in high school—she looked great.

Dammit.

“I’ll take him the drink, but for the record, nothing’s up. We’re just friends.”

He could flirt all he wanted with Emily—it was none of my business.

That’s what I kept repeating to myself as I made my way to where the foursome was standing around a high top. Then I saw her hand her phone to him and he pressed some buttons before giving it back to her, then looked down as his phone lit up.

It was obvious he’d just put his number in her contacts.

We’d slept together, and he wouldn’t even give me his number.

It’s his birthday, Kristy Marie. You cannot throw this drink at him. It’s his birthday, Kristy Marie. You cannot throw this drink at him.

I chanted that in my head for the last ten feet until I stood in front of him and awkwardly shoved the glass in his direction.

“Josie asked me to bring this to you. It’s from Mr. Berber.”

He chuckled when he held up a full glass already in his hand. “I’ll have to tell Josie to not accept any more drinks for me.” Then the fucker looked at Emily and asked, “Do you want it?”

“What is it?”

“Gin and tonic,” I answered for him as I set the glass down on their table.

Emily wrinkled her cute little pug nose and said, “That’s what my dad drinks.”

“Oh, damn!” Rob roared with a laugh. “I think she just called you old, dude.”

Justin took it in stride and shrugged. “I am old.”

Emily and Katelyn giggled, then Emily said, “Well, I didn’t want to say it…”

Oh, hell no.

“You’re not old—you’re an adult whose taste has outgrown the hard seltzer or cheap beer served at frat parties.” I made a point of looking at the white can in Katelyn’s hand.

Rob pretended to cough, but I could see the smirk behind his fist.

At the same time as Rob’s cough, Emily and Katelyn gasped in unison, then stared at me with their mouths gaping.

Maybe I’d gone too far.

Meh—wouldn’t be the first time.

But Justin’s soft smile as he stared at me warmed me all the way to my toes.

He reached for my hand like he had when he introduced me to Michelle. Once again, I took it without hesitation and let him pull me to his side.
