Chapter Two

Justin

I’m glad I stopped at the bakery, I thought as I took a bite of cinnamon roll while sitting at my kitchen table. Even if Kristy wasn’t there.

It’d been a wealth of information, not to mention the cinnamon roll was freaking amazing.

I would have been fucking pissed if I’d walked into a surprise party. I didn’t like surprises. Period.

Although, I was willing to bet Rob would give me a heads up before taking me inside. I decided I’d play dumb later to test my theory.

And Kristy was coming to the party—knowing it was in my honor. That had to mean something, right?

Finally, Lainey definitely knew something had transpired between me and Kristy, but it was obvious Kristy hadn’t told her what exactly.

I sure as hell wasn’t going to say anything.

But I had to wonder if Lainey suggesting I might take someone home from the party meant she and Kristy had talked about me, and she was open to it.

I wasn’t putting too much stock into bringing Kristy back to my place, but hopefully I would be able to enjoy hanging out with her tonight.

I looked at the clock on the microwave and decided I had enough time to work out and pay some bills before I needed to take a shower.

Kristy

I strutted into Hannigan’s, trying to mask my nerves. My grandma once told me if I ever felt insecure, to act like I owned the place.

So that’s what I did.

“Why are you so nervous?” Lainey asked once we found a seat at the bar.

I quickly blurted out, “I’m not nervous—you’re nervous.”

Real mature, Kristy.

The corner of Lainey’s mouth hitched. “I’m not nervous. I know who’s taking me home tonight. You, on the other hand, are doing your ‘I own the place’ walk that you do when you’re uncomfortable.”

I never should have told her about that.

“Am not.”

“Good, because he’s not even here. Rob isn’t supposed to bring him until ten before eight.”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

Lainey signaled to Josie, the bartender. “We’ll have two shots of tequila and...” she glanced at the tap tower before finishing, “two Blue Moons drafts.”

“Two shots each?” Josie teased.

“Not yet,” Lainey shot back. “But the night is young. We have to pace ourselves.”

“Do you want well or something a little better?”

Lainey perused the liquors lined up behind the bar. “How about Tito’s?”

“Salt and lime?”
