"You've shaken things up for me, Callum. In a good way. Sometimes we don't know we're complacent until something comes along and forces us to use clearer vision."
I palm the back of her neck, giving her the lightest massage. "I'm just honored you're letting me come along for the ride."
Eden leans in. Kisses me. Then she stands up and walks with purpose into the kitchen, returning with Oliver's permission slip and a pen. She signs it with a flourish, then shrugs and sighs.
My arms open wide for her, and she returns to me, dropping back into my lap and tucking her face into my neck. For the longest time, I hold her just like that.
CHAPTER 47
Eden
Paloma: Crazy what a little bit of good loving can do for a woman. And I'm not just talking about the sex.
Eden: I know. The way he believes in me makes me believe in myself.
Paloma: Have you started talking about the future yet?
Eden: Not specifically. But I can tell he's serious about me. Building a website and hosting a giveaway are long-term things.
Paloma: I like how he doesn't play games. That's nice. And rare.
Eden: Me, too. He feels like a real man. Obviously he's not perfect, but he's not hiding behind his flaws and using them as an excuse for why he is the way he is.
Paloma: Can we press the duplicate button and give me his twin?
Eden: Good men still exist.
Paloma: So I'm told.
Paloma: How does Oliver feel about you and Callum?
Eden: I haven't had an honest conversation with him yet, but I know he really likes Callum. They play catch and Oliver asks him a million questions about website creation and business. He's been focused on a school camping trip he has this weekend. He even made his own checklist of everything he needs.
Paloma: Like mother, like son.
Eden: You should come visit soon. Get some fresh mountain air.
Paloma: And meet your new man?
Eden: Yes.
"Are you sure you have everything you need?"
"Yes, Mom."
"Portable charger?"
"Yes, Mom."
"Flashlight?"
"Yes, Mom."
Oliver looks pleadingly at Eugenio's mom, Esme, who has just finished her goodbye.
"Ok, fine," I grumble. "I love you. Take good care of yourself."
Oliver gives me a hug, and he and Eugenio join the group of students waiting to board the bus. They jostle one another, their excitement palpable.
