Kade has no basis for comparison, but he knows what he sees.
Lachlan doesn’t seem to need an answer.
They kiss for a little while longer before Lachlan sighs and rolls off.
Kade rights himself, decides he likes it up here.
Lachlan cups his face once Kade’s belt is buckled. ‘After this, when we get the book and we get back here, I have something to give you.’
Kade bites his lip, likes the small bite of pain. ‘Is it like this?’
‘No,’ Lachlan says, undeniably wry. ‘I made it.’
‘You made this too, Bodyguard.’
‘Just remind me to give it to you, OK?’
Kade rolls his eyes, but it doesn’t dent the good feeling.
He wonders what could.
‘Heard.’
CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR
Riley has never worn field armour.
Tonight, however, Kade suits him up like he would have done for Luca.
They’re in Suit n Boot together, the armoury otherwise quiet.
Kade settles the carrier over his head, pulling on the straps.
‘Ow,’ Riley says flatly. ‘I got shot there, don’t know if you know.’
‘You did? Oh, I had no idea.’
Fastening the side straps beneath his arms, Kade tightens the carrier until it sits correctly over Riley’s broad chest.
‘Breathe.’
‘I am breathing.’
‘A big one.’
Riley fills his lungs. Kade loosens one strap by half an inch.
‘Better?’
‘Much.’
The armour changes him.
It makes them equals almost.
Kade is both nervous and excited to find out what it’s like to go somewhere with his brother rather than his boss. Admittedly, it’s always going to be boss first, but with them both in gear, the playing field feels level.
‘Can you wear a rig?’ he asks, holding the cable in his hand.
