I slip into the dress and carry the shoes in my hand, then I find my purse, and as softly as I can, I go to their study once more. I saw what I was looking for the night before.

I'm just about to take the item out of its glass case when cold dread pours over me. I don't have to turn around to see who's behind me.

Chapter Eleven

Lucy

I spin around, guilt written all over my face. But it's more my heart breaking in three that destroys me.

I don't wait for them to ask me what I'm doing. Also, my gosh, I wish I were a better thief. I bet Genevieve Raj would make a superb thief. Clearly, my jealousy has no bounds.

"A man with a mustache broke into my apartment. He said he works for a man called The Boss," I gasp out the words.

"He heard my brother got a job as a chauffeur for you, and he wanted me to help them steal the Montague key. I don't even know what that is. I just know it's very valuable, and he had a buyer that was interested in the key."

I don't even take a breath before I continue.

"I didn't want to involve my brother. He was so happy for this job, so I decided I was going to do it on my own, and he wouldn't even know, and you wouldn't know either who took your key.

"I was meant to go and see my brother, put a sedative into his drink, and take his place. Instead, I stress-hugged him and gave him a concussion and a sprained wrist, and now he's in the hospital, and my world is falling apart, and the deal for the farmhouse I wanted to buy so I could open my own B&B fell through, and I'm just," I sob uncontrollably now. I have no idea why I had to give them my entire life story.

"Please, you have to believe me, Dean had nothing to do with this. It's all on me."

I'm met with silence, then laughter.

"This isn't funny," I say, annoyed and embarrassed.

"It's very funny, sweetheart. You really don't know who we are, do you?" Max says as he comes toward me, bends his knees, and flips me up over his shoulder. This is so not funny anymore.

"Put me down," I shriek. My entire world is falling apart, and they're laughing. He obviously does not listen to me and continues to carry me back to the bedroom.

He places me on my knees this time.

"It's about time we tell you exactly who we are and that when we claimed you—when we said you were ours—those weren't just pretty words, my love," Max says.

"You know we're the richest men in the world, but did you know we're also the most powerful, the most scary? Mafia crime lords of the underworld report to us," Warren adds.

"The man with the mustache and his boss, The Boss, have already signed a very serious agreement with the devils the instant we claimed you as ours," Peter takes up after Warren.

"They wouldn't dare come within a city of you or your brother ever again."

"But—" I have no idea what to make of this.

"Are there any more buts, sweetheart?"

"Are my problems now just over?"

"Haven't we made ourselves clear enough?"

But I find it extremely hard to think when they shuck off their track bottoms, leaving them gloriously naked.

I swallow hard as they come toward me.

"Now open your mouth, sweetheart," Peter says.

"And suck," Warren adds.
