I chuckle because that’s what Mia used to call me, and fuck, it warms my heart even though it’s her best friend.

Dr. Perdue glances at me before looking back to the monitor beside her bed.

“This is probably temporary and nothing to be concerned about. We’ll give her a little time for the medication to fully work its way out of her system and then do an EEG and a functional MRI if nothing changes. It’s fairly common after a traumatic incident for a patient to have some confusion. Talk to her like you normally would and be calm. If you’re upset, she’ll be upset.”

I take a seat in the chair beside her bed and take a deep breath. Calm. I can do this. I nearly laugh at myself because if it’s for Mia, I can do anything I have to.

“I’m glad you’re awake, Angel. I missed you.”

Her eyes dart around the room before landing back on my face with confusion.

“I’m Jett. It’s complicated, but I’m pretty sure I’m your boyfriend although that seems like a silly title.”

Husband sounds better to me, but now is not the time for that considering I don’t think she has a clue who I am.

“You were in an accident,” I explain gently, “but you’re going to be just fine. I know you might be scared, but I’m going to be here through everything.”

Talking to an unresponsive person is as difficult as speaking to one in a coma. I still don’t know if she’s hearing anything I say.

She glances down at my hands every few minutes, which I think is odd. I snap my gaze from my hands to her face with confusion.

What is going through your beautiful mind?

“I can tell you’re thinking something, baby, but I don’t understand. I wish you’d talk to me.”

She blows out an exasperated breath as a tear rolls down her cheeks and she wiggles her fingers in obvious pain.

“Jett,” she whispers, and my entire world stops on a dime.

“Angel,” I croak out as the emotion nearly chokes me.

“Good girl, talk to me, baby.”

She shakes her head slightly before wincing from the pain.

“Hurt,” she whispers.

I stand up and lean my head down, so my face is close to hers.

“Can you tell me where it hurts, Angel? Just mouth it if it’s your throat.”

She mouths ‘throat’ and I’m equally pissed and relieved.

“Of course, baby. You had a tube down your throat and had heavy medication. Your throat is probably very dry. I’ll be right back.”

Mia makes a pained sound, and I know my girl is right here with me. She doesn’t want me to go, and fuck, right now, that is everything.

“How about I yell at them from here, then?”

I grab the call button attached to the side of the bed and call the nurse.

“Do you always stick a tube down someone’s throat, give them heavy medication, then bring them out of a coma you fucking put them in, and not give them a goddamn drink of water?”

“I’ll be right there, sir.” she stammers.
