I shake my head because I’m sure everybody expects I’d fuck her the second she offered herself to me. Normally, I would have, but even though I blew shit up with Mia, I don’t want to fuck anyone else.

“I’m alone. Jake just left, and I know you’re responsible for his visit, so you can cut the shit, Jag.”

He quickly retorts, “I didn’t. Hell, I didn’t know he even went to see you. Give me ten and I’ll be there.”

I hang up and am relieved that I have ten minutes before he gets here. I’ll top myself off before I have to deal with another ‘get clean’ conversation.

Chapter Twenty

MIA

“I’m going to go talk to Jett.” Jagger says.

McKinley grabs his arm, tears sliding down her cheeks.

“I’ve seen with my own eyes what he’s capable of, Jagger. Please don’t go. Not alone.”

Folding my arms over my chest from where I sit in front of Jagger’s dressing table, I scowl at him.

“I’m going with you. I want to see him.”

They both turn to me in unison, “Why?”

That’s a really good question, and I don’t even have an answer for it. We aren’t in a relationship anymore. I nearly roll my eyes at myself. Was that even a relationship? It was the shortest one I’ve ever had.

“Why? So he can hurt you more?” Jagger says, his voice matching the pain in my heart.

I rise out of the chair and glare daggers at him.

“I’m not a kid, Jagger, stop treating me like one. I want to see him. That’s all you need to know. I know you’re trying to protect me, but please stop.” I understand his concerns for me but I’m determined to see Jett.

He lets out an audible sigh and waves his hand to the door. I walk through with McKinley and Jagger behind me when I nearly crash into Jake standing in the hallway.

“Grab Hendrix,” Jagger says, I assume to Jake.

My best friend glances at me with concern.

“Are you sure about this? What if he’s angry again?”

I nod without responding to her second question.I’m not afraid of Jett. I saw the same thing on stage she did, but I don’t believe he’d ever physically attack me. It’s his words that might destroy me. I don’t know if I loved Jett, but I do care about him a lot. He made me feel whole for a short time, and feeling that for the first time in your life is hard to let go of.

I’m the first to enter Jett’s dressing room after knocking on the door and getting no response. The smell immediately assaults my senses. I cover my nose with my hand and spot Jett on the floor, face down in his own vomit. Jagger rushes to him, cursing under his breath as he rolls him over. Reaching into his pocket he pulls out something that I’ve never seen before. He pulls the cap off before spraying it in his left nostril when he spots something on his wrist. In what looks like Sharpie, it says in capital letters, ‘DNR’.

“Asshole.” Jake says before adding, “This fucker planned to get DNR tattooed so we’d just let him fucking die.”

Jagger sprays into Jett’s other nostril as Hendrix stands by shaking his head and calling 9-1-1.

“Is it an overdose?” I ask no one in particular. McKinley moves to me and places her arm around my waist. I stare at Jett, unconscious, covered with vomit, his skin so pale just like last time. I’m convinced he’s dead.

“How is this happening again? This just happened.” I breathe as I stand with disbelief washing over me because of what’s right in front of me. Is this a thing? Do people OD more than once in such a short amount of time?

The paramedics rush in and Jagger says, “He’s breathing, but he’s unconscious. I administered one spray of Narcan in each nostril.”

Jagger somehow looks different this time, as they take Jett out of the room on a stretcher with Jake and Hendrix following behind them. He doesn’t appear as angry as before, it’s like the weight of this situation with Jett has aged him twenty years in the last several minutes. He looks like he just lost his best friend.

McKinley glances between the two of us, and I nod.
