My hands clench into fists. “She’s my wife. My responsibility. I’ll handle her how I see fit, Doc.”
“I’m disappointed in you,” she whispers, and my chest tightens. I’m close to Meredith, and her saying those words fucking hurts.
“I didn’t want this,” I mutter, and she nods.
“I know, but neither did she. You’ve kept your lifestyle. Your friends. Your home. But she’s had to change all of that for you. She was sold off like an unwanted piece of property, only to come here and be made to feel unwanted by you. And you’re always in the pole room doing God knows what, and she can’t even choose who her first kiss is going to be with.”
My jaw clenches. “Do you really think I’m going to let my wife go around kissing men and making a fool of me?”
“You’re kind of doing that on your own,” she whispers.
“They’ll sort it out between themselves,” Bones says to her. “Suit was forced into this marriage, Doc. You need to cut him some slack.”
“It’s their business,” Prez announces, frowning at Meredith. “Suit is not hurting her in any way. In fact, it sounds like she’s having a good time here.”
Of course, Elena walks in at that moment, her hair tied in a messy knot on top of her head. She’s dressed in pink shorts and an oversized tank top. I can still see the bruises on her wrists, although they are starting to fade. I haven’t forgotten about those.
“I’m not trying to make a fool of you, Suit. I’m just trying to find my place here.”
“Elena—”
She turns her pale green, now narrowed eyes to Bones. “He was forced into this to benefit the club. I was forced here because I’m seen as nothing more than property. I gave up my whole life, and he gave up nothing.”
Bones puts his hands in the air. “I get it, sweetheart. But Suit is a good man. It’s just a hard situation.”
“Is it so hard to be married to me?” she asks in a hurt tone.
Fuck.
“No, Elena, I never said that,” I reply, pinching the bridge of my nose.
Prez quickly stands and tries to leave the room. He always was the smartest man here.
But she doesn’t let him get away so easily.
“Rome, how long is the deal you made going to last? Do you think it would be possible for Suit and me to get an annulment after a year?” she asks, and my jaw clenches.
Prez’s blue eyes cut to me before returning to her. “I’m not sure, Elena. I can’t make any promises.”
He can’t tell her it’s a possibility because if she lets that drop to her family, it will cause a lot of problems.
“Come on, let’s get changed and go sit by the pool,” Meredith murmurs, pouring Elena a cup and then leading her back upstairs.
“You’re getting us all in trouble,” Bones mutters, watching his woman leave. “I’m going to throw you to the wolves next time. Just fuck her and get it over with, please. The sexual tension is killing me.”
I’m lost in my thoughts for the next few minutes, wondering why I don’t like the thought of her wanting an annulment. It would give me my life and freedom back. Standing up with my coffee in my hand, I head outside to catch a glimpse of her.
When I see the tiny red bikini she’s wearing, I almost choke. She looks like a goddess, with curves for days and all in the right places. The halter top barely covers the sides of her breasts, and fuck me, I can see the bars of her pierced nipples through the thin material. The high-waisted bottoms she’s wearing show off that peachy ass of hers. She lies back down on the sun lounger and covers her face with her sunglasses.
How did I ever think she looked plain?
I’m checking out every inch of her when Pyro comes near the pool, with two of his dogs on leads. I’m opening the sliding door and storming out there before I can process what I’m doing.
“They are so cute!” I hear her telling him. “And I’m so glad the puppies arrived safely.”
Grabbing a towel from the pile, I lay it on top of her, covering her body.
“What are you doing?” she scowls, sitting up.
