The front looks like a corset with flowers printed into the sheer lace, the same lace the rest of the dress is made of. Her sleeves flare at her elbows and flow down to the ground with the train of her dress.
It’s not as over-the-top as I know Nathan wanted. He’d wanted to hire a designer to make it custom for her, but she’d refused.
This dress might not be what he wanted, but it’s perfectly her, and she would have looked good in a paper bag, so there's that.
She holds a bundle of sunflowers the kids picked from the garden, her hair half-up, pulled back in a clip at the back of her head that Nate’s mother gifted her a few years ago just for this day. Her makeup is light, just enough to help her natural beauty shine, and I swear I could get lost in her.
The music starts, and she takes her first step as she looks up. Her eyes zero in on us, one after the other, and with each gaze she meets, a little of her worry melts away.
My eyes are glued to her as she makes her way down the aisle, stopping before us. Her smile makes my heart race as the moment sinks in.
Kat will be ours forever.
“You may kiss the bride,” Sofía says, and I hear her smile as I shake myself.
I hadn’t even realized she was speaking before just now, let alone marrying us, but as I watch Nathan move in to kiss her before Oliver, then Alex, and Des leaving me for last.
“Hey, Little Wife.” Her cheeks turn that adorable shade of pink I love so much, her lips slightly puffy from the others, her eyes sparkling, her happiness like a tangible thing radiating off of her.
“Hi.”
Wrapping my arm around her waist, I pull her into my chest, sealing our lips together.
I have to remind myself we're in a room full of family and, more importantly, our children, to pull away. She blinks her eyes open slowly, her pupils blown wide, and yeah, I’m ready for a honeymoon, just a few days without kids where Kat doesn’t get to leave the bed or wear clothes.
Sounds like heaven to me.
She steps back, beaming, before she pulls something from her bouquet and unrolls it.
A few years ago I would have been confused, but five kids later I feel like a pro.
“Fuck yeah! This one’s mine for sure!” Desmond shouts, snatching the picture with a smile that rivals Kat’s, then drops to his knees and starts talking to her stomach.
“Another one?” Madaline asks, and everyone laughs; if only she knew, at this rate we might need to renovate the house and add a few more bedrooms.
But I can think of a million worse ways to spend my life.
