Their breathing was heavy. What had just transpired between them was intense. It was more than just sex, and she wasn’t sure if that was what she wanted. Charlotte had been here before with Rafe and got burned.

She wasn’t going to confuse sex for love with him.

Not again.

Chapter 18

THEY SPENT THE rest of the day together, and it was how Charlotte imagined a typical couple would spend the afternoon. After their explosive sex, they took a shower, and…okay, they had sex again. In her past relationships, she’d never had sex as good or as frequent as she did with Rafe, so she considered this piece an anomaly.

They made lunch together, and it was the best turkey and cheese sandwich she had tasted to date. It was the simple moments of sitting on the couch and being comfortable around each other doing nothing. She didn’t want the time with Rafe to end, but she had to work.

He didn’t fuss at all when she mentioned this to him. Instead, he grabbed a book from her collection and started to read. It was nice, both of them in the same room doing different things. She enjoyed the easy companionship.

Rafe chuckled, and she stopped typing.

“What are giggling about over there?”

He was laying on her couch and put the book down on his chest. “I’m reading one of Chelsea Handler’s books you have. She is something else. It’s obvious why she is a comedian.”

She quickly saved her work so they could discuss books. “Which one did you start with? I have all of her books.”

“My Horizontal Life. She could give Jason a run for his money.”

This was true. But she had to defend her brother because he wasn’t the only one in their circle of friends who was all about one-night stands and no-strings-attached sex.

“Jason,” she agreed. “But also, Nate. And Samantha. Oh, I don’t think Oliver is much of a saint either.”

He exhaled. “I am relieved you didn’t list any of my sisters.”

“I would never snitch!”

“I know you like to keep secrets close.” There was an edge to his voice, but she didn’t push for why.

She went back to typing away on her laptop when something clicked for Rafe.

“Wait, does that mean you have secrets about my sisters? Oh my god, are they having sex? Gabriella doesn’t even have a boyfriend. And the guy Elena is dating is such a dick, I can guarantee a break-up is on the horizon. She’s going to get sick of his shit.”

Rafe spoke of his sisters like they needed his protection. He’d hate to hear it, but it was adorable.

“My lips are sealed.”

“Yeah, it’s probably better I don’t know anything about their love lives.”

“I agree.” She wagged her eyebrows, suggesting he was better off. It was too funny watching his reaction.

He stood up, and the book dropped to the floor. A giggle popped out of her, despite trying to control herself. He took a few quick strides to her and lifted her from her seat.

“You’re being mean on purpose.”

The laughter couldn’t stop on her end. “You should see yourself. Elena and Gabriella are adults and can do what they want.”

“Charlie, you’re wicked. You better make up for it.”

Her arms wrapped around his neck. “And how do you suggest I do that?”

There was no talking when his mouth crashed down on hers and they wound up in her bedroom for round three. Sex had officially made it on her top five list.

SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE was on TV and Rafe was still with her. She was surprised they were both still awake at this point. They sat together watching the show, her leaning against him. As much as she’d loved Rafe ravaging her throughout the day, it was nice to snuggle and watch the show.
