“Shit,” he responded, handing her some of the food. “Does this mean you will stop giving me a hard time about my lifestyle?”
She rolled her eyes. “If you mean your relentless sleeping around, that’s a negative.”
“It was worth asking.”
“Why did you get all this food?” she asked.
He stuffed a bite of taco into his mouth. “Don’t be dramatic about it because I know you always text when it happens, but you get caught up at work a lot. I get it, someone needs your direction or whatever, shit happens. But today, I knew it would be busy and didn’t want to waste time with the lines if we had to go back for more.”
“Fair.”
“What or who made such an impression on you that you’re giving yourself a break?”
Charlotte brushed some crumbs from the nachos off her pants. “Now, it’s your turn not to be dramatic.”
“Depends. Are you going to tell me it was Charlie Sheen or something?”
“You are seriously unstable.”
“That’s my point, though. I would get dramatic if he was the one who made you all Zen.”
“It was Rafe.”
There was silence.
“As in Rafael Bianchi?” Jason’s eyes widened, like there was no way they were talking about the same person.
She finished her food and stretched her legs out. The breeze was a cool welcome to the sweat starting to form. There was no way he wasn’t going to make a big deal about this. Over the past few years, her and Rafe had gone from friends to enemies. Him being the reason for her relaxed nature was definitely suspicious.
“Yes, as in Rafe Bianchi. We’re all friends, and the more we got to talking, the more I realized a change was needed.”
He shrugged. “I guess so. Either way, I like that you’re taking better care of yourself. If Rafe was the one who got you to see you needed to stop living for Catch Me, then good. He always has a way with the ladies.”
Red alert! Red alert!
A warning alarm screeched in her head.
She didn’t want to be a snoop, but if there was any time to get her needed intel on Rafe’s dating life, it was now. Her and Rafe hadn’t breeched the subject of recent relationships and she had to know.
She needed to tread lightly asking her brother or he would get suspicious.
“Right?” she said jokingly, like it was common knowledge he had a way with the ladies. “I can’t remember the last time he had a girlfriend.”
Jason lifted a shoulder like the conversation of Rafe’s dating life was boring. “He dates around, but it’s normally casual. His last girlfriend was fun. She was chill and liked sports more than Rafe. One night, she even beat me in Madden.”
Charlotte doubted Madden was a shoe game, but now wasn’t the time to confirm why Jason played something in fashion. Her focus was all about Rafe.
“What was her name again?” Charlotte didn’t have to pretend anymore. She literally had no idea the names of anyone Rafe had dated.
“Annette,” Jason said, eating her half of the quesadilla they shared.
Leave it to a man to only give a one-word answer. If she were asking Rachel or Jada, she would have a detailed dossier on the person and a twenty-minute discussion.
“Right,” she said with annoyance. “How long did they date?”
Jason gave her an odd look.
“I’m just trying to remember her, that’s all.”
