THE LOST SHEEP
The bell calls the sheep back to the fold.
The shepherd counts them, then shuts the door.
One of them bows her head.
She is told this is how she will live.
Still, night enters through the cracks.
It smells of fir, stone, and blood.
Neither the prayer beside the bed
nor the bolt upon the door can keep it out.
There are hungers hidden beneath wool,
angers held behind the teeth.
The wood knows them without naming them.
The wind carries them beyond the bells.
Come morning, the door is still shut.
The fire burns low. The bell rings.
One place lies empty in the straw.
