“Yep. Then my boss came in with his team of men and fixed the metal bars, good as new.”

He wasn’t about to get into the whole alien thing with Fyn. His bright-eyed innocence probably wasn’t ready for that yet. Although he was just about to experience Tobin’s telepathic ability—

The front door opened, and Ciaran came in, quickly followed by Tobin and Fray.

“Oh, hi,” Fyn said.

“Hey, Fyn,” Tobin said.

“So, Fyn, I need to explain something,” Ciaran began. “I don’t know if you know this, but some cephamorphs have special abilities.”

“Superpowers, basically,” Sawyer added. “Like in Marvel and DC movies.”

Fyn’s gaze cut to Sawyer’s, wide-eyed and very lost. He shook his head. “I, uh, I don’t know what that means.”

Oh.

“You don’t have TV in the mountains, of course,” Sawyer said, ashamed for not clocking that earlier.

“Special abilities, like Salem being able to morph into different things,” Ciaran explained.

Fyn lit up with recognition now. “Oh, sure.”

“Well,” Tobin said. “I have the ability to see into your mind, like, into your memories.”

“For real?” Fyn grinned. “That’s amazing.”

“So, if you’re okay with it, I can try and see what you saw today. But only if you say it’s okay.”

“It won’t hurt. You can’t feel anything,” Fray added. “I promise. He does it to me all the time.”

“Okay,” Fyn said.

Tobin pulled a chair over and sat close enough to Fyn to touch his forearm. “It helps if I touch the person I’m doing it with,” he said quietly. “Okay, so all you need to do is clear your mind of everything else. Just relax and remember where you were, what you were doing...”

“I was with Zaq. We’d been talking, and then we raced each other—”

“Oh wow,” Tobin said. “You’re fast, and that was a big jump.” He put his hand to his stomach. “Gonna get motion sickness.”

Fyn laughed. “I am the fastest in my herd.”

Tobin let out a low breath and tried again. “Okay, maybe skip to the part where you see the humans.”

“There were two of them,” Fyn said.

“I can see them,” Tobin said. He closed his eyes for a second. “Surveyor’s tripod and some kind of camera. Probably just taking footage for their records.”

Tobin sat there for a second, then pulled his hand back quickly, as if he’d seen something he probably wasn’t supposed to see. Maybe something personal.

Tobin never wanted to invade someone’s personal thoughts or memories, but sometimes it just happened so fast, he didn’t have time to pull his shield back.

“Thanks, Fyn,” Tobin said. Then he put his hand on Ciaran’s arm and allowed him to see what Fyn had seen, and then he showed Sawyer.

“Hmm,” Sawyer said. “The logo on the door of the ute. I’ve seen that before.”

It was an orange square with letters....

Sawyer went to his computer and did a quick internet search, and...
