“He can be angry at me then.” My voice breaks again. “He just has to stay alive.”

Rafael looks toward the direction Luciano just left.

Then he opens the door for me. “Get in.”

The back door opens before the SUV stops moving.

I’m out the moment the tires stop beneath the covered entrance to the medical wing.

The vehicle that carried Luciano is already empty. Both rear doors remain open, and blood marks the edge of the seat where they lifted him out.

“Where is he?”

Rafael comes around the SUV. “They took him inside.”

I run toward the doors.

The medical wing is too bright.

White walls. White floors. White lights reflecting from every polished surface. People move everywhere, but Luciano isn’t one of them.

“Where’s my husband?”

A nurse steps into my path. “Elena.”

I recognize her.

Daniela. One of the women my brothers helped after they found her among the women Arsen held captive. She stayed at Angelo’s penthouse for a while before deciding to return to school.

“They’re assessing him now,” she says.

“I need to see him.”

“You can’t go into the trauma room.”

“I’m his wife.”

“I understand, but the doctors need room to work.”

I don’t have time for this bitch.

I try to move around her. Rafael catches my arm.

“Let me go.”

“Elena.”

“I need to know what’s happening.”

“And they’ll tell us as soon as they know.” His grip loosens without releasing me. “Let them help him.”

The doors at the end of the corridor swing open.

For half a second, I see several people crowded around a bed.

Then the doors close again.
