“That’s doubtful.”
“I’m serious.” I sit forward. “If there’s someone you want, tell me who he is. If he’s someone I can work with, I’ll make it work.”
For the first time since I started this conversation, she goes completely quiet.
Something flickers across her face.
Fear.
Maybe uncertainty.
It’s gone quickly, but I saw it.
“If there’s someone,” I repeat, quieter this time, “give me the chance to figure it out.”
Her gaze drops.
For a moment, I think she’s going to tell me.
Then she shakes her head. “There isn’t.”
She’s lying.
I don’t know why.
And pushing her harder in the middle of my wedding day probably won’t get me the truth.
“Fine.”
Her eyes narrow. “Fine?”
“I’ll start looking.”
“Luciano,” she breathes.
“What?”
“I’m barely twenty.”
“I know how old you are.”
“Then why are we having this conversation?”
“Because I’m not marrying you off next month.”
“You’re still looking.”
“Yes.”
She laughs without humor. “Amazing.”
She looks away again.
I exhale.
“I’m not trying to punish you because I married Elena.”
“That’s what it feels like.”
