I gesture at myself.

His gaze moves slowly over the deep-pink dress I chose for lunch, taking in the fitted waist, the neckline, and the amount of thigh left exposed beneath the too short hem.

“You look gorgeous.”

“No.”

His eyes return to mine. “No?”

“That’s the problem.”

“I’m beginning to think I entered this conversation too late.”

“Why are you never jealous?”

Something changes in his expression.

Then he laughs.

I release his shirt. “Don’t laugh.”

“Who says I’m never jealous?”

“I do. You never tell me when something is too short or too tight or too revealing. You don’t care if I go out with Bianca dressed like this. You don’t get annoyed when I’m away from you for hours.”

“I approve of every outfit you wear.”

“That isn’t the point.”

“You look beautiful in all of them.”

“That still isn’t the point.”

He studies me for a moment, unmistakable amusement gathering in his eyes.

“You want me to be over the top.”

“Don’t say it like I’m being ridiculous.”

“I’m trying to understand the complaint, mi vida. Would you like me to forbid the dress?”

“No.”

“Demand that you change?”

“No.”

“Follow you to lunch and glare at anyone who looks at you?”

“That is exactly the kind of over-the-top behavior I don’t want.”

“Then we agree.”

“Luciano.”

His laughter fades, but the warmth remains. He brings both hands to my waist and draws me close again.

“I get jealous, princesa. I just don’t confuse another man looking at you with something you’ve done wrong.”
