“A gun.”
She nods against my palm. “A gun.”
Every instinct I have tells me to add more men. Higher walls. More cameras. Keep every weapon as far away from her hands as possible.
But she isn’t asking to work for me.
She’s asking not to be helpless without me.
“You’ll train with me.”
Her lips part.
“Only you?”
“Yes.”
That smile comes back.
“Do I get rewards for doing well?”
My thumb brushes over the corner of her mouth.
“Behave.”
“No.”
Of course not.
“And if I’m satisfied that you can handle one properly, we’ll find something suitable for you.”
Her whole face brightens.
“You mean it?”
“I said yes, didn’t I?”
“You said if.”
Her nose crinkles again. This time, I do smile.
“Don’t push it.”
She grins up at me.
I look down at her for another moment. My hand drops.
“Still angry with me about Miguel?”
The grin fades, but her eyes still look at me in a way I don’t completely deserve.
“Not as angry.”
“It’s still gray for me,” she continues. “I don’t think that part is going to become black and white just because I love you.”
“That’s fair.”
Her gaze drops to my mouth before returning to my eyes.
