I set the journals on the nearest table.
If he loses his mind, I need my hands free.
Vasilisa appears in the doorway.
She is somehow even rounder than Adriana.
Considering the woman is barely five feet tall, I have no idea where that baby is going to go for the rest of the pregnancy.
Elena’s only two inches taller than Vasilisa.
Would she look like that?
I shake off the thoughts.
Not now.
Vasilisa looks at me, then Santo, then the journals.
Her eyes narrow. “Scythe. No.”
Santo says something low and furious to her. In Russian.
I stare at him. Of course he speaks more than one language.
Vasilisa answers in English. “If he’s taking them for Elena, let him have them.”
Santo responds in Russian again.
“We don’t need to speak Russian for this.”
Santo gives another clipped sentence.
“He’s standing right there, Santo.”
He doesn’t want me listening. He has nothing to worry about. I don’t understand a fucking word.
Vasilisa looks at me. “You can take them.”
“Thank you.”
“No, he cannot,” Santo snaps.
I reach for the journals.
His eyes cut toward me, then back to Vasilisa.
“Santo, we’ve already read them,” she says.
“That is irrelevant.”
“We can share.”
“They are not library books, Vasilisa.”
“They are literally inside a library.”
I look at her. I like her. She’s logical.
