Casimir is quiet for a moment.
“He doesn’t need the alliance for protection. He wants a seat before every powerful man in our world starts making decisions in a room he can’t enter.”
“Then find him another door.”
A quiet laugh comes through the phone.
“You want Elena.”
“Yes.”
“All right. I’ll refuse Amato and give Byrne a connection with Drakos. He’ll like that alliance. After that, we’re even.”
“Done.”
“Anything else?”
“No.”
“Shame. I was prepared to kill someone.”
I end the call and get into the car. One prospective husband gone. Another redirected.
Angelo still believes Elena will be waiting for Nico at nine.
I call my pilot.
“Have the plane ready in two hours.”
“Florida, sir?”
“Yes.”
I start the engine and look back at Angelo’s estate.
He needs time to cool down. I’m willing to give it to him.
By nine, my girl and I will be in the air.
Chapter 44
Elena
Iwake to Luciano standing beside the bed with an outfit draped over one arm and a large designer bag in his hand.
The room is still dark. The clock beside me reads five twenty.
“Get dressed, princesa.”
I blink at him. “That’s an alarming way to wake someone before sunrise.”
“We’re leaving.”
I push myself upright. “Because Nico’s coming?”
“Among other reasons.”
“And Angelo still wants me to move into the penthouse?”
