“Where are your things?”
I stop outside an empty office. “My things?”
“Yes. Your things. The ones you were supposed to have shipped over here when your apartment was ready.”
“Oh. They’re with me.”
“So your apartment was ready?”
“No.”
“I was going to have you move into the penthouse now. We won’t be using it for a few months.” His voice sharpens slightly. “So where are your things? Where are you? I don’t see any charge for a hotel on my card. Did you use Santo’s?”
“I’m not at a hotel.”
“Then where the hell are you, Elena?”
I glance through the glass wall at the rest of Lucero Tower Two.
Luciano’s building.
Luciano’s office.
Luciano’s guards stationed around me as though protecting me is part of the daily operating budget.
“With Luciano.”
Silence.
I pull the phone away from my ear and check the screen.
Still connected.
“What do you mean you’re with Luciano?”
“I mean I’ve been staying at his house.”
“For how long?”
“Since I left California.”
His voice drops.
“You’ve been living with Luciano Castillo this entire time?”
“Living sounds dramatic.”
“Is your clothing at his house?”
“Yes.”
“Then you’re living there.”
I roll my eyes. “Fine. I’m living there.”
The guard glances toward me.
I stare until he looks away again.
