He spears a blueberry with the fork and brings it to my mouth.

I eat it automatically.

Luciano feeding me breakfast while I sit in his lap has become so normal that I barely think about it anymore. I simply open my mouth when he offers me something and complain when he chooses incorrectly.

He offers me a cherry.

I lean away. “You put cherries in it again.”

“You like them.”

“That isn’t the point.”

“It’s the only relevant one.”

“The relevant point is that you continue making unilateral fruit decisions.”

He holds the cherry against my lips.

I glare at him. He waits. I eat it.

“See?” he says.

“Your arrogance is exhausting.”

Lucero Tower Two is much larger than I expected.

Not just Luciano’s office. The entire building.

He owns enough space here to establish a small government, which feels excessive unless he’s setting up cartel headquarters.

We step off the elevator onto another floor of glass walls, dark wood, and polished stone. Everything is expensive without trying too hard to look expensive. The offices are already furnished. Desks arranged in neat rows. Conference rooms with enormous screens mounted along the walls. People moving in and out carrying folders, laptops, and boxes of equipment.

Actual people.

Doing what appears to be actual work.

I glance at Luciano beside me.

He has one hand settled at the base of my spine as he guides me down the hall, sleeves rolled to his forearms, expression calm and unreadable.

A guard follows several feet behind us, another stands near the elevators, and I’ve spotted several more since we entered the building.

Luciano’s men are usually quiet enough that I forget they exist until one of them appears beside me. Here, they’re everywhere.

I look around again.

“Why Lucero?”

He glances down at me. “It means light.”

“I know what it means. Your name means light too.”

“Then you already have your answer.”

“So you did name the towers after yourself.”
