“I was.”

“You’re not even going to pretend you weren’t?”

“Would you believe me?”

“Absolutely not.”

“Then we’ve saved time.”

Irritating man.

I step farther into the room. “I have a question.”

“Only one?”

“I can come back with more if you’d prefer.”

His mouth curves. “I’m sure you will.”

I look at the sketchbook, reconsider murder, and force my attention back to him.

“I want you to train me.”

His amusement disappears. His attention settles completely on me.

“Are you sure?”

“I wouldn’t be standing here asking if I weren’t.”

“That wasn’t an answer.”

Of course it wasn’t. Three words can’t pass between us without being cross-examined.

“Yes,” I say. “I’m sure.”

His watches me for another moment before he nods. “Then I’ll train you.”

The answer comes so easily that I become suspicious.

“That’s it?”

“Were you expecting another application?”

“I already filled one out.”

“Enthusiastically.”

Heat rushes into my cheeks. “You’re never going to let me forget that, are you?”

“I haven’t decided.”

That means no.

I straighten my shoulders. “There’s another part.”

“Naturally.”

“I need your help.”
