‘We have a suspect about to be interviewed at any moment.’
‘You do, oh that’s good. I didn’t think you’d find them so soon.’
‘Do you know Paul Graham, Rena?’
She shrugged. ‘No.’
‘Did you ever see the guy who cleaned for Rachel?’
‘Possibly.’
Cain was watching Rena closely. ‘What does “possibly” mean? You saw him or you didn’t?’
She flicked her gaze in his direction and smiled. ‘I have a bad memory, I don’t remember faces or names.’
‘Oh, yet you remembered that my colleague wasn’t as good-looking as I am.’
Rena’s cheeks flared an angry red at being caught in a blatant lie. ‘Well, I remember some faces.’
‘Cut the crap, did you ever see Paul Graham at your sister’s flat?’
‘I saw a male cleaning operative, is that what you call them, a couple of times when I visited. Yes.’
‘But you don’t remember his name?’ Cain pushed.
‘Why would I, he was bleaching the toilet for God’s sake. There was nothing memorable about him.’
‘Strange, he remembers you.’
Morgan knew Cain was goading her because they hadn’t even spoken to Paul Graham yet, but she let him continue.
‘What did he say about me?’ Rena was glaring at Cain now, gone was the nervous disposition she’d displayed in front of Morgan and Ben a couple of days ago. Instead, she was cool and very confident, so much so that Morgan wondered if she’d changed her meds, but surely, they wouldn’t have kicked in so soon.
‘He said you were nuts.’ Cain smiled at Rena, and Morgan couldn’t believe what he was saying and she almost poked him, but he had a plan, so she let him continue.
‘Everyone thinks I’m nuts, they always say, oh that Rena Derry is as mad as the mad hatter, but they don’t know me. My own sister didn’t know me, and now she’s gone I don’t have to be anyone other than myself.’
‘You pretended to be a little unhinged, why?’ Morgan asked.
‘Why not? I was sick to death of everyone telling me what to do. Bipolar Rena was left alone to do what she wanted with no demands.’
Morgan couldn’t help herself. ‘Did you kill your sister, Rena?’
‘No, I did not but I’m not sad that someone else did. Am I under arrest? Have you got a warrant?’
Morgan shook her head.
‘Good, then get the fuck out and if you find any proof that I did, come back and I’ll go with you willingly.’
She opened the front door and waited for them to leave.
Cain walked out first, then Morgan. The door slammed behind them and Cain looked at Morgan.
‘What just happened?’
‘If I knew, I’d tell you but I’m as confused as you are.’
‘That was weird.’
