Morgan picked up a cup, held it to her nose and inhaled deeply. ‘There is no finer aroma in the world.’ Then she picked up a bun and held it to her heart. ‘Amy, I love you.’

Cain rolled his eyes but grinned at her. ‘And here was me thinking you loved me.’

‘Did you bring in the goods this morning, Cain? No, that’s your answer.’

‘I drove her to buy them, same thing.’

Morgan took a huge bite of the warm bun and sighed. Chewing, she said, ‘No, it’s not.’ Almost spitting bread all over her desk.

‘Disgusting, don’t speak with your mouth full, Brookes, isn’t that what you always tell me?’ Cain was grimacing in her direction.

Ben ate his bun in three bites and gave Amy a thumbs-up. ‘That was amazing.’

‘I figured you wouldn’t have had much breakfast.’

Marc walked in, took one look at the last coffee and bun, and whooped. ‘Is that for me?’

He looked so grateful that Morgan thought he was going to cry and she felt a little bad for him.

Amy nodded. ‘Yes, it is, boss.’

‘Thank you, how much do I owe you?’

‘Nothing, I wanted to buy you all breakfast.’

Cain, who was now rolling his eyes in her direction, put a finger in his mouth and pretended to make himself sick.

‘That’s enough crawling, Amy, I’m going to puke up my free breakfast.’

‘Sod off, I meant it. I’m not crawling. I know how hard you guys work; it’s just a little appreciation.’

Ben glared at Cain. ‘Shut up.’

Cain threw his hands in the air. ‘You’re just wanting to get off work early.’

‘Cain,’ Ben growled at him.

‘All right, I’ll shut up.’

Cain turned to Amy and blew her a kiss. She gave him the middle finger and just like that all peace was restored to the office. Morgan thought that those two were more like a married couple than her and Ben. Would they ever eventually see how good of a fit they were for each other? Maybe one day when they were both a little over their grief they might see that and get together. That would be like some great love story. Little Ava Rose already doted on Cain, and he was so good with her.

‘Anyway, Morgan will do that.’ Ben mentioning her name brought her out of her little fantasy world.

‘Morgan will do what?’ she asked.

‘I knew you weren’t listening, you had that dreamy look in your eyes.’

‘Cain,’ she hissed at him.

Ben took a large mouthful of coffee, smiled at them as if they were a group of preschool children, and then repeated himself. ‘Morgan will take Dan to do the official ID for Rachel. I’ll meet you there after I’ve been to speak with Ash’s mum. She’s requesting to speak to senior officers, so that means you’re coming with me, boss.’

Marc nodded. ‘Fine by me, but what’s she wanting from the both of us that you can’t give her or the FLO?’

‘No idea, boss.’

Marc sighed. ‘Okay, I believe we’re getting some extra officers from Barrow to help with the growing number of tasks. Do you have any specific plans for them? We can leave directions for them if they don’t arrive before we set off.’

‘Yes, I want every house, business, holiday home in the area canvassed for CCTV, doorbell cameras, dashcam footage. Someone had to have seen the suspect arrive at Ash’s front door. We have footage from the area surrounding Rachel’s address that Amy will review once she’s got it all.’
