“Harper applied.” I don’t know why I say it. Maybe to delay the inevitable.

His eyes narrow on me. “She won’t get in.”

“I applied.” Sidney strokes her hand down her glass and looks up at me through her eyelashes. “With my grandfather’s legacy, I should be an easy admittance.”

I definitely don’t want to go to the same school with Sidney. Besides, we know her first choice of school isn’t Harvard, she’s just saying what she needs to get my father’s attention.

“Harper has a better chance of getting in than I do.” I shrug. It’s not fact, but it could be. I’m just another rich white boy from a rich family. Harper is smart enough, and with her history, she could make it in. “If she goes, maybe I’ll go to college nearby to be close to her.”

Rage lights my father’s eyes, but his focus is on me, so he doesn’t notice when Penny knocks her fork off the table.

“Oops, could you get that for me, Sidney?” Penny gives her a wide smile.

Sidney bends over, but my father looks to a server and tells him to bring a fork for his clumsy daughter. While their attention is shifted, she quickly switches our drinks. I give her a quizzical look, but she shakes her head.

The server comes over and takes the fork from Sidney and gives a new fork to Penny.

“Thank you,” Penny says softly.

“I’m sorry. My children don’t seem to know how to have dinner anymore.” My father glares at each of us before lifting his glass.

Sidney takes hers and watches me lift mine. Penny swallows and lifts hers.

“To your futures.” My dad’s stony gaze lingers on me. “May they be everything we’ve prepared for.”

CHAPTER 20

Checkmate

Harper

“What the fuck is happening?” I stare at the screen as they all take a drink. I can’t see Luke’s face, but Penny obviously suspected something from her look and then swapped glasses. “I don’t like this.”

Caden strokes his hand down my back as we sit on the couch watching this fucked up dinner party. He stopped me from leaving when Luke’s dad pushed him against the wall. Jack sits beside us with his laptop open as he scrolls through pictures.

“I think your girl just saved Luke from being roofied.” Jack glances up for a moment before returning to the pics. He goes through them so fast that I can’t keep up. But it’s a lot of leaves with rocks in the background, so if something changes, it’s obvious. Like the one of a squirrel walking across the branch in front of the camera.

“Why would Sidney roofie Luke? Strike that. I know why, but that means his dad knows about it? Otherwise, why would he take Luke out of the room?”

“It also means Penny saw it happen,” Caden murmurs. “Looks like she’s picking a side.”

Something loosens inside me. I wanted to believe the best of Penny, but I also knew it wasn’t smart. If she really did just take a drug meant for Luke, then maybe she does want family more than popularity.

Thankfully, Eli and Kenz are there to help her. My knee bounces. We have to wait to see what happens. The camera catches Sidney’s catty smile and Penny’s small sip of the wine.

“What’s going to happen to her?” I blow out a breath.

“Depends on the drug.” Caden scratches the back of his head. “We’ll know in fifteen to thirty minutes though.”

I clutch my stomach when it turns. Sidney continues to talk as if nothing happened. They eat their cake, and then their father leaves.

When Luke stands and goes to the door, he holds it open.

Sidney stops and touches his button above where the camera is. “I know your little pet can’t play tonight. So if you need me—”

Luke steps back. “Thanks. I’ll pass.”

Sidney smirks and turns back to Penny. “I need to go freshen up.”
